Massage to Relieve Neck Pain
Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical treatment. Out of 291 conditions studied, neck pain is ranked 4th highest in terms of disability according to an Australian study, Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study.  Additional global research ranks neck pain as a significant impairment that affects quality of life and well-being.
The neck is the main thoroughfare for muscles, blood vessels and major arteries, nerves, bones and cartilage to support vital brain, respiratory, and nerve functions in the body.  The neck muscles, specifically the sternocleidomastoid, which runs up each side of the neck and the trapezius, which is located at the back of the neck and along the spine, are the reason we can flex, rotate and maintain stable postures in our neck and head.  The neck muscles, which are also connected to the shoulders, jaw, scapula and spine, have the greatest endurance of any body muscles.
Massage can be safe and supportive treatment for neck pain. The length of recovery depends on such factors as the intensity of the injury, age, health and previous neck injuries that might affect present healing.  In the hands of a trained professional, neck pain can be treated effectively and can provide enhanced support for complete recovery.

Yoga improves strength, balance and flexibility. Slow movements and deep breathing increase blood flow and warm up muscles, while holding a pose can build strength. Balance on one foot, while holding the other foot to your calf or above the knee (but never on the knee) at a right angle.

What is the ideal number of massage per month?
A massage every week or every two weeks would be ideal but not realistic for every person. We also have to remember that regular massages are important to help prevent injury, pain and tension build up in the muscle fibers and for de-stressing/relaxing the mind and body.

Massage can help treat stress-related physical conditions, including:
Anxiety and depression.
Fatigue.
Headaches and migraines.
Pain, including muscle tension, back, shoulder and neck pain.
Repetitive stress injuries.

What is the best massage for a pulled back muscle?
Deep Tissue Massage

This type of massage therapy involves the application of hard pressure into the sore muscles, pressing deeply through the muscles to the bone as possible. It allows the release of scar tissue and helps relax tightly knotted muscles that cause chronic neck and upper back pain.

What Are The Neuromuscular Therapy Massage Benefits?
Reduced or complete elimination of pain.
Higher levels of flexibility and strength.
Increased ease and efficiency of movement.
Better posture.
Balanced musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
Improved blood circulation.
Lower levels of body toxins.

08/08/2023

What are 3 benefits of massage on pain?
Therapeutic massage may relieve pain by way of several mechanisms, including relaxing painful muscles, tendons, and joints; relieving stress and anxiety; and possibly helping to “close the pain gate” by stimulating competing nerve fibers and impeding pain messages to and from the brain.

07/21/2023

Here are a few reasons to consider turning to massage to support your mobility:
Gives you the range of motion to exercise properly and lowers your injury risk
Increases strength by improving muscle function
Improves posture so you move in a balanced and fluid way
Reduces pain, especially lower back pain that is a chronic inhibitor of mobility
Reduces muscle cramps or spasms that can prohibit full movement
Improves your motor functions if you have physical disabilities
Stretches and works stiff or weak muscles which are often the source of pain. With less pain, you could reduce your need for medication
Encourages more rapid recovery post workout
Stimulates the production of the body’s natural lubricants so you can stay flexible
Can enhance athletic performance
When it is flexibility and mobility you seek, massage therapy is a beneficial treatment to keep you moving.

07/11/2023

How Massage can help:
Regular massage can be the key to keeping yourself flexible, having full range of motion and assuring your joints move without resistance. With massage, you also protect yourself from injury that can immobilize you.  Massage therapy techniques work on muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and joints by using such techniques as compression, kneading, tapping, rocking, as well as the use of pressure and friction. Such processes increase the temperature of soft tissues which promotes elasticity and reduces the constriction that adhesion’s and scar tissue can cause. It promotes the removal of waste products from the muscles which reduces swelling and relieves pain and inflammation. Massage relaxes muscles, stimulates blood and oxygen flow throughout your body so you can keep you moving and stay flexible.

07/05/2023

Why Mobility Matters and How Massage Can Help
“Mobility is the ability of a joint to move freely through a given range of motion (ROM) without restriction from surrounding tissues. Flexibility is defined as the ability of soft tissues (which include muscles, tendons and ligaments) to lengthen correctly, which allows a joint to move through its optimal ROM”
You probably don’t think too much about the gift of mobility in your life. Most of us hop out of bed in the morning, drive our car to work, and freely move through our day as we walk, sit, stand and move about. If you think about it, mobility is pretty much the key to our ability to fully function and to be independent. Movement lets us go where we want to and do what we want to.  When those simple acts of personal freedom become constricted for us what can we do?  And…More importantly, what can we do to maintain mobility throughout our lives?
The short answer is regular massage to encourage your body to stay flexible and maintain your mobility.
When muscles are damaged through overuse or injury, there is a reduction in blood circulation that causes tightness, restriction and constriction in tissue fluidity.  As well, a more sedentary lifestyle or aging can be added factors that limit your physical ease of movement. Massage is an effective treatment to improve blood flow that will not only help relax and heal damaged muscles but will also support improved movement and function throughout connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints in the body.

The Physiology of Proprioception
Proprioception works because your body uses receptors in the skin, muscles and joints to transfer the positioning/sensing information via the nervous system to the brain.
Your body’s muscle structure has nerve endings called proprioceptors that are embedded in the muscle fibres, tendons and joints. Proprioceptors are the communication system that informs the brain about any movement of the body.  They have different functions depending on where they are located in the body but they are all designed to carry information to the brain about where the body is under tension, where a joint is moving, what position it is in and what function is being carried out so that the appropriate force or the eye-hand coordination can occur for any given circumstance. When muscles are overstretched, it is the proprioceptors that communicate with the brain about the condition which then results in muscle contraction to prevent damage.

Massage and the Proprioceptors’ job
Proprioceptors send messages through the central nervous system to the brain about the sensory inputs from massage. This communication is the mechanism whereby the muscles can relax and return to a healed status. Massage uses gentle and slow stretching techniques to coax tight and contracted muscles to lengthen and relax. The gentle and slow approach gives the muscles a prolonged time to receive messages from the brain that encourage integration and adaptation of this longer more relaxed disposition for the muscles. The more input, the greater development of improved proprioception. Massage sets our proprioceptive awareness free within the body so that more balance, coordination and efficient movement can occur.

Massage therapy can support a healthy spine and spinal cord function because it:
increases blood flow to all body organs and hormonal centers
promotes relaxation and rejuvenation
clears toxicity from the cellular structures including from the spinal cord and restores flow to nerve function
reduces joint pain and muscle strain by stretching and unknotting tight muscles and ligaments so that bones and joints can return to their proper positioning and full functions.
Poor body mechanics, injuries, tension and stress can play a powerful role in your poor health. Consistently engaged, massage therapy can be a powerful treatment that restores your spinal alignment, returns your full mobility and promotes a complete mind/body sense of health and wellbeing.

06/19/2023

How do you know your spine is out of alignment?
Symptoms of a misaligned spine are not often easily associated with the spine but if you experience any of these, it might be time to ask your massage therapist for support:
Headaches (including migraines), back pain or joint pain
Your shoes do not wear down evenly at the heels
Difficulty with turning your head or hips smoothly and easily
Your immune response is poor and you tend to contract flus, colds and other illnesses
Your neck, back or joints are often stiff and movement is restricted
You notice numbness or tingling in your extremities (hands or feet)
You have poor body posture
You are chronically tired and rarely feel rested even after a good night’s sleep

The Graston technique uses a stainless-steel instrument and special massage method to identify areas of muscle adhesion, or scar-like tissue, that can be improved. A healthcare provider uses the instrument and massage in combination to stretch and relax the muscle tissues.

The majority of soft tissue injuries respond well to Graston with research showing an average 87% success rate. A partial list of conditions that respond to Graston Technique includes: Rotator cuff tendonitis/osis and frozen shoulder. Tennis elbow/Golfer's elbow.

The Graston tools allow greater efficiency and consistency, which means quicker results, thus allowing the provider to move on to other areas on the body that need treatment. This helps lead to superior and faster recovery times as well being able to see more patients overall.

Does massage help or hurt arthritis?
As Claire Gavin, a Toronto-based RMT explains, “Massage helps relieve pain and eases the muscle stiffness associated with arthritis by improving circulation, helping to reduce inflammation. That translates to enhanced blood flow to arthritic joints, improved movement, and reduced pain,”.

Do you have a goal weight in mind, but just don’t know how to reach it?

Have you tried many different diets, but the weight just won’t shift?

Have you lost some weight, but hit a plateau?

This is the reality many Americans face. With 70% of the population being overweight or obese, it’s a huge struggle and a huge problem we face.

So you hit the gym and greatly restrict your calorie intake. You lose a few pounds but then fall off the wagon. You regain all the weight you lost, and then some. There IS a better way.

In this 2-hour class we will cover:
• Why we gain fat (you may be surprised by some of the reasons)
• How your body feels about the extra pounds (it's not what you think)
