Happy Friday from the EIU MBA program! This week we are excited to highlight an MBA (with a GIS Option) student, and our newest graduate assistant, Ayomide Akinyemi. Ayomide grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, a large metropolitan area in west Africa of close to 20 million people, similar in size to other large metros Cairo, Egypt and Kinshasa, DRC.
Ayo has an educational background in urban planning and professional background that includes five years of experience working with GIS technologies. He enrolled at Eastern with a strong desire to achieve his career goals. Along with his MBA, he is pursuing a Master of Science in Sustainability. He desires to attain and develop sustainable real estate and is channeled by his drive for commercial and residential development.
Ayo says he enjoys working with professors to collect data and assisting them with their research. During his undergraduate studies, he interned with Vista Research and Data Services, a Lagos-based company. While working as an IT support trainee, Ayo and his team members designed open data kit forms in Microsoft Excel. The local state government used the data kit to develop a model city plan for the Oshodi-Isolo government area. Following the internship, Ayo worked as a GIS technician for Faith Surveys, a surveying and geo-informatics company, where he was involved in various small and large-scale projects.
Ayo says his previous experience culminated in his work with Ottoman Turks, a financial institution in charge of land use charges in Lagos State. He worked as a GIS analyst with involvement in various projects, including creating a map that identified properties in the relevant district, using digitized georeferenced satellite imagery, and more. He worked as a project manager for the last nine months at the firm, collaborating with the finance department to develop strategies and policies, saving the company over five million naira ($10,800) per year. In addition to his primary role in the organization, he represented his company at stakeholder meetings with government officials and delivered a monthly report to the board of directors.
We are glad to have you at Eastern, Ayo!

Happy Friday from the EIU MBA program! This week we are excited to highlight Eastern Illinois University School of Business professor, Dr. Candra Chahyadi.
Dr. Chahyadi was born and raised in Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world. He came to the United States in 1999 to pursue his master's degree in international business at the University of South Carolina. During his master's program, he received an opportunity to spend 18 months studying and working in Beijing, China. After finishing his master's degree, he continued his study at the University of Oklahoma as he realized his passion is teaching and research. He completed his Ph.D. in Finance in 2007 and joined the EIU faculty. He has been a Panther ever since.
Dr. Chahyadi says, "I truly enjoy my experiences teaching and interacting with students at EIU, and I am very thankful for the opportunity to meet and influence young people in the School of Business." When asked why he chose to be a professor, he says, "the ability and opportunity to serve and influence young people. Life is too short to focus only on my own life and agenda." He always believed that serving people is a great way of having a meaningful and impactful life. He loves teaching MBA classes because Eastern's MBA is student-centric, which is very "special" for him.
He adds, "I am teaching personal financial transformation holistically, meaning that to improve your finances and have a fulfilling life, you must align your goals with things that matter." He believes that understanding who you are and knowing why you do things is a great start to finding your true financial freedom. Dr. Chahyadi has also taught refugees, human trafficking survivors, farmers, migrant workers, and some marginalized people about personal finance. When they start learning about and dealing with their past hurts and pains that negatively affect their financial decision-making ability, they start improving their finances significantly (despite their limited financial knowledge). Isn't that amazing?
When not at work, Dr. Chahyadi loves creating financial content (videos and podcast recordings).
Thank you for being a part of EIU MBA program, Dr. Chahyadi!
Greetings from the EIU MBA program! This week we are excited to highlight EIU MBA Research Option student, Fatin Faruky.
Fatin is from Bangladesh, a South Asian country that is one of the largest exporters of ready-made garments in the world. Fatin started her MBA program in the fall of 2022, and this is her second semester at Eastern. When asked why she chose EIU, she said, 'I applied to EIU because it is an AACSB-accredited business school that offers an excellent business education.'
Fatin completed her bachelor’s and first master's degree with a major in banking and finance from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. She is interested in building a career in academia. So, after graduating, she worked in a school for two years to familiarize herself with the world of academia. Fatin is currently a graduate assistant at the School of Business. She says she enjoys her work here as a Graduate Assistant, adding that "I like the interactions with the professors. I enjoy collecting data and assisting professors in their research work."
After graduating from the EIU MBA Program, Fatin wants to pursue Ph.D. in finance. She chose to study the MBA because it is building a strong foundation for her academic career. She says that she finds the faculty at Eastern to be highly qualified and extremely helpful, and working with them on research will help improve her research skills.
When Fatin is not working or studying, she likes to travel and explore new places. She enjoys painting and specifically oil paintings and acrylic paintings. One of her paintings of a park scene is posted here. She also likes to cook and spend time with her family during her leisure time.
We appreciate having Fatin in the MBA program!

Greetings from the EIU MBA program! It is application season for the summer and fall semesters. The EIU MBA prepares students for employment in positions of leadership in small and large businesses, industry, government, and non-profit organizations in a contemporary global environment.
Eastern’s revised admission requirements allow for program admission without completion of the GMAT or GRE exam for students with a 3.0 or higher GPA. However, completing and scoring well on the GMAT may increase the likelihood of an applicant receiving a graduate assistantship offer.
A limited number of graduate assistantships are expected to be available for the Fall 2023 semester for the most competitive and well-qualified MBA applicants. Assistantship positions provide a tuition waiver and monthly stipend. Recipients work 18 hours per week for the university in exchange.
If interested in the MBA program, you can apply at https://www.eiu.edu/mba/application.php.
If you are interested in a GA position, you can apply at https://www.eiu.edu/graduate/GAapplication/GAappl.php.
If you have any questions, send us an email at [email protected] or contact the MBA Coordinator.
Greetings EIU MBA students, alums, faculty, staff, prospective students and program supporters! Happy 2023! We hope 2023 is treating you well. We are excited to be back on campus and wish you all the best during this spring semester!
This is a busy week on the EIU campus, with new students, new classes, and lots of activity. Pictured below are Dr. David Martin, Eastern's School of Business Chair since the summer of 2022, Accounting Professor Steven Benner, who is an alum of the EIU MBA program, Patty Watson, Office Manager for the School of Business, and Yousef Nour, current EIU Research Option MBA student.
Dr. Martin completed his Ph.D. at Saint Louis University in 1991. He was Dean of the School of Business at Western Connecticut State University before joining EIU this past summer. We are glad you are here, Dr. Martin!
Steve Benner is an Eastern MBA alum and professor of Financial and Managerial Accounting at EIU; both courses are prerequisites for the EIU MBA program. Yousef is an MBA student and a graduate assistant for the MBA program. His bachelor's degree is from Eastern Mediterranean University in the northern part of Cyprus. He tutors Operations Management and just obtained his Illinois driver's license (having held licenses in 4 other countries before moving to the Illinois). Now, he's ready to buy a car!
Congratulations to all our MBA students who graduated in December 2022. Well Done!
Happy Monday from the EIU MBA program! Christmas is almost here, and as we are heading into the final week of the semester, we are proud of what you have accomplished this semester. Happy Thanksgiving from EIU's MBA Program!
Happy Friday from the EIU MBA program! This week we are excited to highlight our MBA Research Option student, Yousef Nour.
Yousef is a Palestinian but was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. He pursued his undergraduate degree in Cyprus, where he double majored in Industrial Engineering and Business Administration, and graduated with high honors in both majors. Yousef joined Eastern as an exchange student in 2020 and returned two years later to begin the MBA program. When asked what attracted him to Eastern, Yousef says "the staff and the faculty, especially Dr. Bayer, were very nice and helpful. I was very motivated and appreciated how good they were. The quality of the faculty in the business administration program at Eastern made me want to pursue an MBA degree." Yousef is a graduate assistant for the EIU MBA program. He chose to pursue Eastern's MBA because he plans to become a business professor. The MBA degree is preparing him for a career with the quicker achievement of a leadership role than professionals who do not have an MBA. The MBA degree also aligns with Yousef's industrial and business administration background.
Yousef says he loves the culture at Eastern and finds the people of Charleston are friendly, perhaps because it is a small town, and socializing here is very easy for Yousef. He says that the MBA curriculum is very well designed, with course projects that prepare graduates to tackle real-world business problems.
Yousef is a professional boxer in two different countries. When not studying for classes or working, he enjoys running and cooking. He has traveled to seventeen countries and speaks multiple languages.
Yousef likes the sophistication professors have at Eastern and the knowledge they provide to students. He also enjoys the activities in the MBA program.
After graduating from the MBA program, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in management or operations and supply chain management.
We are glad to have Yousef in the MBA program!

Today we are pleased to introduce EIU Accounting Concentration MBA student, Jennifer Wisner. Jennifer graduated from EIU with her bachelor’s degree in Accounting in May 2022 and is now an MBA student and Graduate Assistant for Dr. Nic Robinson and the Accounting Discipline. Jennifer chose to attend EIU because ‘I liked how friendly and welcoming everyone was when I toured the campus.’ She also felt that EIU had a plethora of opportunities for her and was a place where she could easily connect with others. Jennifer enjoyed her EIU undergraduate years so much that she decided to stick around for her MBA. She chose to pursue the MBA because she needed 150 credit hours to sit for the CPA exam. She earned 120 through her bachelor’s degree and will earn 33 graduate hours from the MBA program. Jennifer says: ‘I think my MBA and CPA license will help to increase my career opportunities!’
During her undergraduate years, Jennifer was active within the Honors College and School of Business. She was a Presidential Scholar and part of the Association of Honors Students, Honors Mentorship Program, and Honors Council. Within the School of Business, she was part of the Student Accounting Society, Beta Alpha Psi, and the School of Business Student Ambassadors. She held several leadership positions in those organizations and with Immanuel Lutheran Campus Ministry. Jennifer interned at Akorn Pharmaceuticals in Decatur for two summers and then at BKD/FORVIS for two summers. As a graduate student, she is a representative of the Lumpkin Dean’s Student Advisory Board, a member of the Graduate Student Advisory Council, and a leader of the Immanuel Lutheran Campus Ministry.
When asked what is so special about Eastern, she says, ‘EIU has always been a special place for me because it’s where I’ve been able to grow academically, professionally, and personally for several years.’ Jennifer enjoys her role as a graduate student and GA because it enables her to act as a mentor and leader for undergraduate students going through many of the same challenges she just went through. ‘I like seeing the students grow and telling them about the various opportunities and resources available to them.’ After graduating, Jennifer plans to study for the CPA exam over the summer and start working for FORVIS in Decatur as a Tax Associate in September 2023.
When she is not busy with studies or work, Jennifer enjoys cooking, reading, and attending dance fitness classes like Zumba. She also enjoys going on walks and attending dance classes to stay active and take a break from work.
If you are interested in the EIU Accounting Department, follow it on Twitter .
We are excited to have you in the MBA program, Jennifer!
