As many of you may know, Herman Rodden died on December 5, following his wife Barbara who died earlier this year. Herman was a long time member of Cole Memorial, and he and Barbara brought up their children in the church. It was a joy to have known him and worked with him on various church projects. One of the wonderful ladies of Cole Memorial, Dot Trull, joined her Lord and Savior on November 14, 2023. My life is better for having known her and her husband Woodrow.

I'm sorry to post that Gail Moore died on October 18, presumably due to complications after suffering a fall. The link to Gail's obituary is below. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 pm Saturday, October 28 at the James Funeral Home in Huntersville.

I had the pleasure of ushering many Cole Memorial Church services with Gail, Arnold Carroll, and Arlee Stutts. We enjoyed working together, perhaps because we had very complementary senses of humor. Paul Sims would occasionally have to come back and admonish us when we got out of hand. I will treasure my memories of Gail.

Good morning Ms. Mangum, Thank you for your prayers over the last few days. Dad passed yesterday afternoon. Your wonderful custom made card actually arrived before he passed. We will miss dad but are so happy that he has been healed.

Paula Veazie asked me to share this post on the Cole Memorial page, so here goes. It's some good news about my daughter Rachel, a PhD student in economics at University of Maryland. She was recognized recently with an award and scholarship. Rachel should graduate in May and then it's on to the working world. MY other two children, Ben and Rebecca, are also doing well, living and working in Charlotte.

Tuesday Gail Moore fell, broke his hip, and had surgery at University Hospital. His surgery went well, and he is still in the hospital. Let’s pray his recovery will also go well!

I am sorry to report that Paul Sims died on August 26, 2023. I post the link to Paul's obituary below. Paul and his wife Carol, who preceded him in death, were wonderful people and members of Cole Memorial for many years. Paul served Cole in many capacities, and I know he had strong faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ.

As noted in the obituary, there will be a graveside service for Paul on Friday at 10 am at Ramah Presbyterian Church in Huntersville.

Katie DiCicco posted that her mother, Suzy, died yesterday. Suzy has been fighting cancer for years and was in hospice care. Suzy, Katie, and Katie's dad Jim were stalwart members of Cole Memorial. Suzy sang in the choir (including a stint as interim choir director) and she also led the drama ministry for a while. Please keep the DiCicco family in your prayers.

Yesterday Ms. Carrie celebrated her 101st birthday with family and friends! Some of her Cole Memorial family included Gloria, Beth, Norma, Gail and Ms. Hazel joined in the celebration! Ms. Carrie and Ms. Hazel, who celebrated her 100 years of life a few weeks ago, are doing well.

Demolition has begun at Cole UMC. Several members as well as friends of our church have expressed interest in having a brick.
The man in charge of the demo said anyone could have a brick(s) only after his crew is finished for the day. Both driveways are blocked with equipment, however it is possible to park on the church’s Walgreens side and walk in. Please obey the demolition crew’s request to arrive after they are finished for the day. It is for your safety and that of the demolition crew.

127 Years

The History of Cole....

In the beginning, there was nothing but grass, trees and farmlands. The year was 1880 and there were no churches in the Derita community. Most folk who lived in the area worshipped at the Presbyterian church on the corner of Sugar Creek & Tryon.

In the early 1880’s, a blacksmith and lay preacher named George Page began to organize Methodist churches in Charlotte and surrounding areas, including Derita. Every Sunday, Mr. Page would walk 7 miles from Charlotte to a 2-room school house and preach the gospel. He would sit down during the reading of the Bible lessons and would stand to preach, this evangelism went on for many years, thus the seeds were being planted for the Methodist church in Derita to emerge.

In October 1891, Mr. & Mrs. John Porter Hunter, members of Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, being sympathetic to Methodism, gave one acre of land and $50 to start a small wooden church on the ground where Cole Memorial UMC stands today.

Our original church building was built and paid for in 1891 at a total cost of $700. The money was collected by the Methodists in the Charlotte area and by members of other churches throughout the community. Our first church was called the Derita Church and was placed on the circuit with three other churches. The deed was held by the Methodist Episcopal church South on Tryon Street, and was transferred in 1898 to the trustees of the Derita Church. Our first pastor, Mr. Page, also taught at the other churches on our circuit, Big Springs, MooresChapel & Trinity. Mr. Page also strted the Pleasant Grove church and was very instrumental in establishing Derita Church, and this little wooden church stood as a monument to the efforts of Mr. George Page.

During these early 1900’s, Sunday School and Church services were held in the afternoons. The little Derita Church was not strong in wealth or membership, with 30-40 members attending in 1905. Some members became discouraged and had thoughts of giving up—but that didn’t happen thanks to the Lord and to the efforts and leadership of Mr. M.L. Eargle—who became superintendent of Sunday School and held that role for over 20years. The little church grew and was held together. New committees were formed and officers elected, and a $500 building fund was established for the advancement of the church. In the following years, the little Derita Church grew and served the Derita community.

… During the summer months, a weekday church school was established under Mrs. M.L. Eargle, Mrs. C.L. Combs & Ms. Carolyn Eargle. In 1938, the Rev. E.O. Cole became Pastor of the Derita Church, and under his leadership the church enjoyed much progress and growth.

In 1939, the small wooden church was moved back from the road, and turned sideways from the original position. After the move, the new, and present, sanctuary was built. The original old wooden church was brick veneered to blend in with the new sanctuary and serves as offices and Sunday school rooms. The new building was names Cole Memorial United Methodist Church in 1948 during the Wester North Carolina Conference.

People at Cole would tell you that their church was named for Mr. Cole and his wife, Mrs. Sue Cole—who passed away in 1952, but he insisted that it was named for her only. Mr. Cole recalled in 1947 “I finally agreed that they could name it for my wife.” Mr. Cole had originally been sent to the church to shut it down, but instead, he built it up!

During the late 1950’s, the current Education Building was built under the leadership of Rev. Roger Tucker.

In 1962, Rev E.H. Lowman was pastor and established a Steering Committee to study future needs of the church, which led to renovation of the sanctuary and education building.

In 1973, Cole Memorial made plans to build a gymnasium, which was completed in the spring of 1974, under the leadership of Rev. W.C. Sides.

… In 1975, over one acre of land was purchased under the leadership of the Rev. T. R. Sigmon. This land was located adjoining the church’s property and is now the corner of Mineral Springs and Sugar Creek Road.

In 1984, a church bus was purchased under Rev. E. Cook, Jr. This bus served members for many years at Cole for the Cole Travellers and other outreach activities. It is still in use as a transport for the Room In the Inn ministry and as an outreach tool for the community.

In 1991, Cole Memorial UMC, celebrated its 100 year anniversary. The Rev. Douglas R. Beard was Pastor.

During the Homecoming service, the Bishop L. Bevel Jones delivered the centennial sermon.

In 1994, the Rev. Harold E. Peacock, Jr. became the pastor at Cole. Under his leadership, the church members voted on massive overhaul of the grounds and buildings. Work began in 2000 and the results are seen today at Cole.

In 2001, the Weaver Preschool project was started and Mrs. Marilyn Weaver bequeathed a sum of money to start the school upon her death. The main goal was to open a Christian day care center for preschool children between the ages of 2-4.

In 2010 , Cole Memorial received its first Hispanic Minister Mr. David Ortigoza. At Cole, David started several Programs involving the Local Hispanic Population . Many Hispanics joined Cole Memorial and became members of the Methodist Church and Faith .

In October 2011 , Cole Memorial United Methodist Church enjoyed it’s 120th Anniversay .

In 2012 , Cole Memorial received its first Female Minister in Rev. Sheila Bishop, and in 2014 we received our final Pastor, Brian Braunschweiger, who led us through closing June 2018.

To this day, Cole Memorial United Methodist Church, has received 35 pastors and many former members have left us for the eternal glory through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Our legacy is very rich due to the faithfulness of both past, present, and future members.
