Happy World Snake Day!

Today is an annual observance to celebrate and raise conservation awareness about snakes. The biggest obstacle facing snakes is negative attitudes and fear from people. Snakes are highly effective predators and play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. You can celebrate World Snake Day by learning about their roles, habitats, and ecological roles.

Tennessee is home to 35 species of snakes, only 4 of which are venomous. Here are some fun facts about Tennessee snakes:

-Eastern Wormsnake: One of the state's most fossorial (living underground) snakes. The small, pointed head is ideal for burrowing in cracks and crevices.

-Scarletsnake: The Scarletsnake mimics the venomous Coral Snake, which does not occur in Tennessee. Scarletsnakes have sharp, enlarged teeth in the back of their mouth used to pierce shells of large eggs that cannot be swallowed.

-North American Racer: Racers are named for their incredible speed in escaping from predators. Black racers use a distinctive hunting strategy known as periscoping, lifting the upper part of their body to search for prey.

-Ring-necked Snake: Ring-necked snakes are nicknamed "Corkscrew" or "Thimble" snakes because of their unique defense behavior of flipping over and tightly coiling their tails to expose the bright belly.

-Eastern Hog-nosed Snake: Employs several defensive, theatrical tactics when approached, including flattening its head and neck, hissing loudly and striking (without biting), raising its upper body, rolling over to play dead, regurgitating and defecating, and releasing musk.

-Kingsnakes are named for their ability to overcome and consume other snakes, especially venomous ones. Kingsnakes play an essential ecological role in controlling these venomous snakes.

-Mississippi Green Watersnakes are ovoviviparous, meaning the females retain their eggs in the oviduct during the development of the young. Thus, young are born "live" and completely developed.

-Pinesnakes exhibit a very remarkable defensive display. When threatened, it hisses loudly, vibrates its tail against leaf litter, inflates its body, raises the front of the body, and strikes with the mouth closed or partially open.

-Red-bellied snakes have a habit of lip curling, which is thought to be related to their habit of eating slimy prey such as slugs, earthworms, and snails.

-Ribbonsnakes are one of the fastest snakes in TN, making them very difficult to catch.

-Juvenile Copperheads wiggle the bright yellow tip of their tail to lure prey within striking distance, a behavior known as caudal luring. Fortunately, Copperhead venom is not very potent, so fatalities from bites are extremely rare.

-Cottonmouth's name derived from their behavior of opening their mouth in a defensive posture to show a white, puffy lining. The aggressive nature projected onto Cottonmouths is greatly exaggerated. These snakes generally try to escape if encountered and escape in a random direction, thus occasionally coming at you rather than away.

-Female Rattlesnakes give live birth (ovoviviparous) to 5-14 young the following late summer or early fall; females typically produce a litter of young every other year.

-Western Pygmy Rattlesnake is listed as Threatened by TWRA and considered rare to very rare and imperiled by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The tiny rattle sounds like the faint buzz of an insect and can usually be heard no farther than 3 feet.

On a 10-hour flight from South Korea to the United States. A mother handed more than 200 passengers on the plane a bag containing candy, gum and earplugs as an apology in advance, in case her 4-month-old baby screamed during the flight.
The bag also contains a message that reads: "Hi, I'm Jun Woo. I'm 4 months old and today I'm traveling to the US with my mom and grandmother. I'm nervous and a little scared. This is my first trip. It's normal for me to cry or make some noise. I'll try to stay calm." But I can't promise. Please use earplugs if my voice is too loud. Enjoy your trip. Thank you."
