Cheyenne's tree planting program: helping to support a more diverse and resilient urban canopy
Cheyenne is experiencing a high mortality rate in its street tree population as the result of an aging forest and past extreme weather events. In addition, citizens are not adequately replacing dead trees which results in large gaps in the tree canopy. With the threat of Emerald Ash Borer and the likely loss of thousands of ash trees once it arrives, Cheyenne’s forest canopy is in serious jeopardy
Join us next week for our Fundraising Committee meeting!
Landscaping crews from Big Bird Landscaping are planting a mix of 97 deciduous and coniferous trees in Lakeview Cemetery and Holliday Park. These trees will contribute to our urban forestry’s efforts to protect and increase Cheyenne’s tree canopy. The different variety of tree species planted represents our efforts to diversify the types of trees in Cheyenne, creating a healthier urban canopy and reducing the effects of disease and age. Funding for the project comes from a grant administered by the Wyoming State Forestry Division.

Crew Update!
The Forestry Crew was busy Monday out at the arboretum doing fuels reduction work behind the Lath House. The objective of fuels reduction work is to remove enough vegetation (fuel) so in the case of wildfire, fires are less severe and can be managed easier and create less of a threat to property, the public, and to firefighters. Buildups of fuel can create more intense fires that are more destructive and harder to contain. Forestry crews limbed up juniper and spruce trees and removed dead and dying shrubs to lessen the fuel load to help prevent a grass fire from moving into trees and shrubs, where it could pose a much greater threat. Cut vegetation was chipped and will be used as mulch around newly planted trees and in landscaped areas. Wyoming State Forestry Division through funding from the Laramie County Conservation District is also working to reduce fuel loading in other areas of the property.
❗️❗️️UPDATE: Tonight's Fundraising Meeting has been cancelled and rescheduled for November 20th 6:30pm - 7:30pm at Westby Edge. We'll be sure to post a reminder as we get closer! Thank you for the understanding.
