As conditions in ICE detention continue to deteriorate, ICE is trying to open new jails across the country. This week MIBF joined 221 organizations in demanding that the administration halt ICE’s immigration detention expansion efforts, restore free phone access to people in detention, and protect the basic rights of people in the agency’s custody. As the number of people in immigrant detention has returned to pre-pandemic levels, MIBF's role has become increasingly vital. This year, MIBF has posted bonds for 12 people, supporting their return to their families and communities. However, it is important to acknowledge that the violence of detention lasts long after immigrants are released. Many people leave detention with significant trauma and few resources to help them reintegrate into their communities and lives. Some of the challenges formerly detained immigrants face include mental health issues and post-traumatic stress disorder, deteriorated physical health, and financial hardship.

While MIBF and other bond funds are essential to support the release of immigrants from ICE detention, we must remember that the abolition of immigrant detention is the only way to end the long-lasting emotional violence and material impacts of the immigration system.

Today, we joined 199 organizations in a letter to the White House to voice outrage at the 2024 spending bill that President Biden signed, which provides $3.4 billion for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to jail 41,500 immigrants per day. This continued expansion of cruel and unnecessary detention must end.

This Earth Day, we recognize how interconnected the fight for migrant justice is to environmental justice.

We acknowledge that the climate crisis doesn’t impact everyone equally. Folks in jails, prisons, and detention centers are disproportionately more vulnerable to climate risks that will continue to worsen in the coming years. One of the best ways to combat the impact of these climate risks inside of detention centers is to reduce the amount of folks in detention.
