🌟 Little Explorers: Risks and Opportunities 🌟
We all love play and want to support it, but our little explorers are consistently testing the limits of their safety and our comfort. Every child has a unique set of abilities and safety awareness, and every caregiver brings their own concerns and risk tolerance to the relationship. Join us on Saturday, July 20, from 10 - 11:30am at HPNC for this unique caregiver education workshop for parents and caregivers of children aged birth to 5.
What you will Learn:
•The Benefits of Risky Play for fostering independence and resilience and building confidence and competence (This is a whole fascinating field of research!)
•The Art of Risk-Benefit-Analysis as applied to the infant, toddler, and preschool ages.
•Rethinking 'No': Explore ways to say 'yes' to play in order to foster a mindset of open exploration.
•Drawing Limits around unsafe behavior while teaching self and safety awareness at a developmentally appropriate level.
•Scaffolding Risky Tasks: Learn how to guide children through risky tasks like cooking, climbing, and tool use, allowing them to build confidence and competence in a supportive environment.
•Practical Take Home Tools around provocative topics like rough and tumble play, climbing, fire, tool use, and others.
As a pediatric occupational therapist, I have experience working with a wide range of abilities, developmental stages, and activity levels, with the goal of finding the “just right challenge” for each child where their physical and cognitive systems are stretched to make way for growth. This is where the magic happens!

Our Story
The Hyde Park Neighborhood Club was founded in 1909 in response to the needs of local youth. Today, in order to continue to meet young people’s changing needs, HPNC has grown and evolved. With a focus on inclusiveness and diversity, one of our major goals is to support working families at all income levels with high-quality childcare and enrichment programs.
HPNC draws young people aged 0-18 from across the South Side. It offers them, their families and caretakers, a broad array of options that include early childhood classes, after school programs, teen mentoring, full-day camps, and enrichment opportunities.
We approach our next century looking forward to further expansion and evolution. While continuing as a collaborative, and sustainable organization, HPNC plans to expand into a hub providing even more high quality, accessible programming to greater numbers of young people and their families on Chicago’s South Side.
Join HPNC’s mission to provide high quality programming to Chicago’s South Side youth of all ages and backgrounds. Donate today at: http://hpnclub.org/index.php/giving/
