Arthur “Art” Gillespie, a former Chicago police captain, underwent a successful double-lung transplant at Northwestern Medicine after being told he couldn’t be helped due to damage from cancer in one lung and from COVID-19 in the other.

“Despite being told ‘no’ by other doctors, Arthur kept searching for answers. I feel honored that we were able to help him,” says Ankit Bharat, MD, chief of Thoracic Surgery and director of Northwestern Medicine Canning Thoracic Institute, who performed the transplant.

Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Center opened in 2004 and has been a staple of the community ever since. This year, the center and eight staff members who have been there since the beginning are celebrating 20 years of delivering excellent care.

Today, the campus has more than 338,000 square feet of facilities. In addition to its Emergency Department, ambulatory surgery center and cancer center, Grayslake Outpatient Center offers other hospital outpatient services including endoscopy, imaging, laboratory, cardiology and pulmonology testing, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. More than 300,000 patients a year have access to more than 25 specialties and clinic procedural offerings.
