No matter your age, you can help ! 💜 Siblings Emma (age 10) and Alex (age 7) have participated in Alzheimer's Association: The Longest Day for the past five years to honor their grandmother and great-grandmother who passed away from Alzheimer’s.
On the summer solstice, they “Get Up and Move for Alzheimer’s” by engaging in different activities throughout the day to keep moving. “The first year, we gave away popsicles for donations, and it was HOT 🔥 outside. Now we stay cool by swimming and doing yoga.”
This year, they plan to start with a walk in their neighborhood, followed by pickleball at a friend’s house, then swimming, yoga, and topping the day off with a dance party 💃! Their advice to fellow fundraisers: “Text everyone to keep them updated on your progress!”
Emma and Alex raise around $12,000 each year for the Alzheimer’s Association in hopes that, one day, there will be a cure for Alzheimer’s. This year they’ve raised $10,070 (and counting)! “It means a lot to us because we don’t want our parents to have it.”
Today, on The Longest Day ☀️, we celebrate the thousands of participants who are fighting the darkness of Alzheimer’s by raising funds and awareness for care, support and research through a fundraising activity of their choice. Every night Shauna Sweeney calls her dad, Mike, across the country in California to tell him she loves him. Sometimes on an extra good day, Mike says, “I love you, too.”
Ten years ago, when Mike was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, Shauna went from being his daughter to part friend, part assistant, and in so many ways, part parent. As her Dad struggled with losing his independence, Shauna struggled with caregiving from nearly 3,000 miles away.
A veteran in big tech, she hacked together solutions to help coordinate care from afar, eventually getting the courage to leave her job and dedicate her life to finding tech solutions to help caregivers along the Alzheimer's and dementia journey.
“When done right, technology can help preserve dignity and enable better care by empowering and supporting family caregivers like me. As we navigate the intricate dance of caring for our parents with Alzheimer's, our embrace of technology not only can lighten the journey but also help us strengthen our deepest bonds.“
Like many family caregivers, Shauna has learned to wear many hats. But today Shauna is simply a loving daughter. This , let’s celebrate the bond between fathers and their children, the strength it takes to navigate this journey together, and the great things it can inspire.

Ten years ago, Patty Smith lost her dear friend Margie to Alzheimer’s. Margie and her husband Matt were avid hikers 🥾⛰️, which inspired him to start the 48 Peaks hiking fundraiser for The Longest Day. Patty joined him by forming a 48 Peaks team in honor of her friend. That’s when Team Sisu was born. "Sisu" means brave, courageous and warrior in Finnish, which Patty felt was a perfect word to embody the spirit of those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers who “hike mountains” every day.
That spring, team Sisu hiked Lafayette Peak, a very scenic but difficult hike. As they ascended to the peak they were encouraged by all of the hikers who noticed their purple shirts and stopped to tell them stories of their loved ones.
Although team Sisu started in memory of Margie, it took on a new meaning when Patty’s friend of 20 years, Debbie, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. When Debbie was unable to hike, the team held a banner at the summit with her name on it to let her know she is always with them.
To date, Patty and Team Sisu have raised over $195,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support and research through The Longest Day. She credits the team’s success to the bonds they have formed, not only from fundraising, but also the triumphs they have shared on the mountains throughout the years.
