It's Patient ID Week. You can advocate for a national strategy on patient ID and matching to standardize information and ensure different hospitals have access to your accurate and complete medical records – a point especially important in the event of an emergency and during travel. Learn more.
What is a Patient ID Number? In general, every hospital system assigns its own unique identifier (known as a medical record number) to each patient whose medical record it maintains. But this makes it difficult to track patients across multiple systems and can even result in duplicate records or overlaid records. Learn more her...

ℹ Since this topic can be new and difficult to understand, AHIMA Foundation's article “What are Public Health Data Systems?” breaks down the following with plenty of resources (and we promise it's much better than asking ChatGPT!)
🔹 What is public health data?
🔹 Where does public health data come from?
🔹 What is the structure of the U.S. public health system?
🔹 What were public health data systems like during COVID-19
🔹 Why was COVID-19 a wake-up call for data problems?
🔹 What is the future of public health data systems?

Today’s typical approach to screening for mental illness isn’t working. It's time we comprehensively screen for and appropriately treat both substance use disorder and the underlying mental illnesses that lead to addiction in primary care, but how can this be integrated into clinical care workflows?
In a new for blog, Proem Behavioral Health CEO John Letter writes: "For any screening tools to be effective in improving patient outcomes, their use must become established in routine clinical practice. This challenges ALL clinic staff, individually and collectively, to make some degree of change in their ways of working and interacting with colleagues and patients."
Practices also need to decide:
◼ How often the screening will occur
◼ Where the screening data will be stored
◼ How results will be communicated to all care team members
◼ How the follow-up strategy will be documented

As continues to make headlines, it is worth looking at ways it can be integrated into ongoing initiatives to improve patient access and patient experience writes Equally AI CEO Ran Ronen.
In a new for blog post, he notes one of the most significant barriers that healthcare organizations face in achieving digital accessibility compliance is a company-wide lack of awareness and education and recommends healthcare organizations provide digital accessibility training to their employees, regardless of their role in the organization.
This training, he says, should not only include the finer points of digital accessibility, but also an understanding of the unique needs and experiences of actual patients with disabilities and low digital literacy. Read more.

Minority populations with low incomes, low health literacy, and obesity have higher rates of gestational diabetes and face barriers to accessing Medicaid-covered care.
In honor of April’s Medicaid Awareness Month, AHIMA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the AHIMA, in partnership with Mother of Fact (NurtureTalk Inc.) and Claris Health, is seeking support for a national initiative to build health literacy and improve access to the evidence-based standard of care for pregnant people at risk for gestational diabetes, a condition that affects 10% to 20% of all U.S. pregnancies and increases the risk for high blood pressure during pregnancy and developing type 2 diabetes after pregnancy.

Research calls digital literacy a “super” social determinant of health (SDoH), because it affects many other areas linked to health outcomes— things like access to good schools, jobs, safe neighborhoods, community support, and health care services.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41746-021-00413-8.pdf
Barriers to digital health literacy can impact people’s ability to use the health technology tools they need to take care of their health. Now, at the age of 92, Carol A. Lewis, MPH, RHIA, deserves a place in . She’s had a front-row seat to the evolution of technology and its impact on the way health systems manage and share data.
Credited for the establishment and continuing development of health record practice in more than 30 countries in the Western Hemisphere, Carol devoted nearly 70 years to the profession and the enhancement of health records in the United States – collaborating with hospital systems, research teams, and public health leaders around the world.
Her advice for today’s HI professionals:
“If you’re dealing with information that affects people’s health, it’s critical to ensure the quality of that information. Some skills you learn today may not be useful in the future. But the basic concepts of accurate data remain the same. So, you must find ways to preserve and improve those basic concepts even when the methodology is changing.”
Carol is also a monthly donor to AHIMA Foundation. "I believe one should contribute to those organizations that provide useful guidelines and give more people an opportunity to enter the field.”

While you’ve probably seen words like “remote patient monitoring” thrown around a lot lately in the digital health world, AHIMA Foundation’s Megan McVane, LCSW says you might not have thought about the steps involved to break down the barriers for something like that to be possible at a micro level with patients. In other words, she writes, “you don’t just give a patient a device at the same time as they get their discharge paperwork. More steps are needed to get from point A to point B.”
