What does a musician become without their instrument? Find out on October 18...
Can a musician use their skills in other ways, and still make music? What does musical virtuosity become if we don't have 88 keys, 4 strings and a bow, or a polished brass tube through which to experience it?
Join us to explore these questions in a concert that both breaks and expands what it means to be a musician and a performer, using “instruments” that run the gamut from a loose jack cable to an IKEA desk lamp to our own bodies and voices.
October 18 at the International Museum of Surgical Science.

We're honored to be part of the 2024 CHIMEFest at the University of Chicago!
We're bringing some of the greatest hits from our LIT program, and adding on a piece by UChicago's own David Bird!
Among other things, we'll be gracing the Logan Center penthouse with:
• Not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4(!) MIDI drum pads
• Several hundred matchsticks (most of them will be lit, all of them will be amplified)
• A semi-sentient IKEA lamp
• The sound of a triple human/fluorescent light circuit (electrons will be flowing in many different directions)
Pieces by Kaj Duncan David, Stefano D'Alessio, Juliana Hodkinson, Simon Løffler, and David Bird.
Moreover, filling out the CHIMEFest program immediately after our concert will be Strasbourg-based ensemble lovemusic. We heartily encourage you to stick around and enjoy their show as well!
Admission is free! Just show up, put your butt in a seat, and enjoy!

No, we’re not trying to bring back that most painful of 2011 fads and no, there’s no exercise involved….
We’re closing out 2023 with our own twist on the most thankful of holidays!
In keeping with our most wide-reaching production to date (Reclaimed Timber), we’re honoring the humble yet mighty plank of wood. Our goal is to give t̶h̶ ̶planks this year and raise $2,000 for all of our optimistic and starry-eyed endeavors which take live performance into the Beyond.
And we have perks! Your tax-deductible donation to BTP by the end of the year can get you sweet sweet swag that we know you’ll cherish forever.
Matchbox cuicas, paper lanterns, studio tours....all can be yours!
Check them out and make your donation at

2023 reminded us that we really have come so far from our humble beginnings nearly a decade ago– What started in 2014 with some performances of Mauricio Kagel’s Dressur has turned into mounting 360-degree productions that involve anything from live video, to surround sound, to 5000 LEDs, to amplified matchsticks.
Since emerging from the pandemic, BTP has premiered 3 original productions in Chicago (LIT, Dreams…and why not?, Black Box Music), and we’ve taken our work from coast to coast– all while keeping the majority of our programming either completely free to access, or under $10 per person.
2023 also reminded us that there’s still so much we have yet to do! In the pipeline for 2024 and onward we have more performances of Reclaimed Timber, many thousands more matches to strike right here in Chicago, and the beginnings of more original productions that continue to find the unexplored territories between music, theater, gesture, performance, and installation. We’re immensely excited and grateful to continue bringing you the most compelling, inventive, and engaging experiences we can!
Your donation to BTP not only supports the "rubber-meets-road" details of the work we do (buying gear, renting venues, paying ourselves and our collaborators a living wage, etc). Your support inevitably ends up expanding the world of live performance and what it can mean, create, and achieve for our society.
When asked why we do what we do, we’re partial to James Baldwin’s idea that the purpose of art is to lay bare the questions which have been hidden by the answers.
We humbly ask you to join us in our ongoing quest to uncover these hidden questions.
Plankfully yours,
John and Adam

We'll be packing up our guitar pedals, our bubble wrap (used as an instrument, not as a packing material...natch), and our IKEA desk lamp, putting Charm City into the GPS and hitting the open road for a whirlwind few days in the mid-Atlantic.
We have shows lined up in quite the suite of venues – from the staple of the Capital's DIY scene, to a new and shiny black box performance lab, to the vaulted ceilings of a university concert hall. We'll be reprising some works from our recent production LIT, as well as some of our long-time favorite works from Tonia Ko, François Sarhan and Mark Applebaum.
We're also very excited to work with the percussion studios at Towson University, Peabody Preparatory, and Peabody Conservatory for some masterclasses and workshops.
If you're in the DMV area, pick a date, check out a show, and come say hi!

Henry Glacon Sarhan and Jennifer Torrence successfully snuck their subversive ideas and perverse skills past the O'Hare CBP agents a few days ago.
In the past 72 hours, they have helped us transform Steppenwolf's 1700 Theater into an oasis, a haven, a bastion....of what exactly we're still not entirely sure.
Misappropriated Bed, Bath, and Beyond merchandise?
Frank discussion on the nature of analogies?
Burt Bacharach?
It's a veritable Schrödinger's Cat of contemporary music. Both and neither. All options at once. Until you look at it.
Come open the box and find out what's inside!
We’re honored to be presenting “Dreams, and why not?” with the support of FACE Foundation, Villa Albertine, and Consulate General of France in Chicago.
Thank you for making this happen!

Nov 4 + 5 as part of Steppenwolf Theatre Company's LookOut Series at Steppenwolf 1700 Theatre
Written and created by Henry Glacon Sarhan
Performed with special guest Jennifer Torrence
The frontier between a lecture and a performance is anything but rigid. Equal parts earnest and nihilist, Dreams, and why not? consciously and continuously breaks the border between reality and fiction, between facts and fabrications—both musical and performative. Starting from a simple presentation of musical instruments and their possibilities, things drift toward a world where songs last one second, the instruments merge with the body and the lecturer loses control over the lecture.
Come see and hear!
Whatever you got going on Sunday afternoon….cancel that. You need to be at Marty's Martini Bar having a drink with us!
2pm-5pm. See you there!
