Emerging Leaders is dedicated to connecting Cleveland's young professionals with United Way of Greater Cleveland's mission. Did you know that understanding poverty means recognizing it as a symptom of deep-rooted systemic challenges - not just individual circumstances? We see things like homelessness, hunger, and unemployment every day but those exist due to in decades of unequal access to education, healthcare, housing, and fair wages. Immediate relief is crucial, but lasting change demands addressing these underlying issues.

Enter the Poverty Tree—a visual representation of how systemic roots manifest visible poverty symptoms. At United Way of Greater Cleveland, we tackle roots and branches through grants, partnerships, and innovative programs. Cultivating lasting changes requires all of us coming together! As decision makers of the future, you have a part to play!

“We want to raise the level of understanding, raise the level of acceptance, and, ultimately, raise the level of empathy we have for experiences that are different from our own."

Last month, United Way employees participated in an LGBTQIA+ Awareness Training to build empathy, awareness, and understanding of the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals. It was an eye-opening conversation that supports stronger, more culturally competent relationships both internally and externally.
