Deaconess Foundation has been a supporter of Mt. Zion's Christian Business League and through this partnership we've been fortunate to connect and become friends with other UCC churches. Deaconess hosts an annual Mission Dinner and brings all churches who receive financial support to meet and share with each other what their ministry is doing to support the community. The dinner this year was held at Mt. Zion and fifteen churches were represented. We heard of amazing work each church is doing to serve their particular community with the dollars received from Deaconess. Photographer Joyce Shinn

The Christian Business League was the brainchild of Rev. Paul Hobson Sadler, Sr. and organized and implemented by Michael Shinn 21 years ago with the purpose of being a faith-based networking organization to encourage minority businesses to do business with each other and to also introduce these smaller businesses to larger organizations to help them with funding and support, thus helping them grow and expand. Prior to his death, Mike served as chairperson for 12 years.
On Friday, May 17, 2024, at Manakiki Golf Course (Dino’s Catering), the League honored Dr. Jerry Sue Thorton, President Emerita of Cuyahoga Community College as its 2024 Michael G. Shinn, Business Trailblazer. The interview with Dr. Thornton was conducted by Dr. Julian M. Earls, Former Director of NASA Glenn Research Center. The interview was outstanding and with the obvious friendship and camaraderie between these two well-known and admired giants in Cleveland, the interview flowed beautifully. Dr. Thornton has done so much for education throughout her career and especially here in Cleveland where she was extremely successful in her fundraising efforts on behalf of Cuyahoga Community College. Her great presence and magnitude generated major support from US Presidents, National Dignitaries and Foreign Prime Ministers, etc.
Dr. Earls is masterful with his interviewing skills and encouraged Dr. Thornton to share many pearls of wisdom that had many of us taking copious notes. The Trailblazer award started in 2011 and seventeen individuals who are senior in their careers have been recognized to date.
In addition to honoring Dr. Thornton, the league recognized seven college students with scholarships, Angela Dodson, Savannah State University--Alina Roach, North Carolina State University--Donovan Morris, University of Cincinnati and University of Sydney, Australia--Desmond Norris, Winston Salem State University--Quentin Bryant, Xavier University--Michael Jones Faulcon, Norfolk State University--Kynnedi Giles Watkins, Howard University.
