Help move
Hello! Our leadership is diligently working on programing for next year and needs our caucus members to nominate keynote speakers for the 2025 conference. Who would you like to see at the conference? Be sure to reach out with suggestions!
[email protected]
First of all thank you ALL for your attendance and feedback at our Multi-cultural Caucus meeting. We cannot exist without each of you!
Some of you indicated your desire to help with programming and or with the combined caucus exhibition, please, please reply and we will get you started! As communicated we cannot do this without you.
From what we gathered at our meeting these are of top concerns: Virtual programming interests: Virtual studio work shop, virtual portfolio review, grant writing, and artist mentorship
This is the plan:
1. We will be working on 4 virtual programming sessions for the year.
2. Set out a list of those interested in mentorship, we will follow up with a pairing.
3. Connect those interested in seeking help with grant writing (this may look like a virtual programming event).
Feel free to reply with more.
Looking forward to re-igniting this caucus with a fruitful year of collaborative efforts.
Cheers!!

Hello members of the SPE, multicultural caucus!
My name is Mari, I am on the board at SPE and Chair of the Multi-Caucus Committee. I formally invite you to attend this years multicultural caucus meeting being held at the national conference in St. Louis. The meeting will be held Thursday at 12 noon, in the Kingsbury room. I will be filling in for the current Caucus chair Shadia Nilforoush.
The Multi-Cultural caucus has been a major part of the community at SPE, addressing visual, educational and social political engagement. Past members, and some present, are Deborah Willis, Wendel White, Bill Gaskin, Sama Alshaibi, Lali Khalid, Corianna Close, Zora Murf, Arthur Fields and many more.
A very important question we will be addressing is the need for a multi-cultural caucus at SPE. How can the caucus be of better service-are there pressing concerns that we can better address and if so how can we best serve those concerns. Are we at the point where inclusive presence and engagement in our community have been met and there is no need for a collective presence? If so, how can we increase further engagement and participation?
It would be a pleasure if you can show your support and involvement in this hearty conversation. Looking forward to what I know will be a dynamic conference.
Cheers,
Mari

We are delighted to have Sama Alshaibi as our distinguished juror. Alshaibi’s practice interrogates the social codes found in images, texts, and artifacts to question the construction of history and its impact on a speculative future. Shaped by photography’s historic and outsized role in generating the gendered and flattened representations of Middle Eastern and North African people and their spaces, Alshaibi reframes this legacy by presenting the Arab female figure as a complex site that embodies the physical and psychic realms of the individual and community when resources, land, mobility, and political agency are compromised. She activates her body as a mobile medium in consideration of those who are violated and uprooted into physical and psychological exile or positioned as unwanted, alien, silenced, and disappeared.

The 2024 SPE National Conference will be just steps away from this national treasure.
On this day in 1965, construction is completed on the Gateway Arch on the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri. This monument, was the completion of one man's dream, Luther Ely Smith. Smith was an attorney in St. Louis and also participated in the design process for another important Midwest memorial, the George Rogers Clark Memorial. Smith was a part of the Federal George Rogers Clark Memorial Commission.
Smith followed the events in Vincennes with great interest and watched as the Clark Memorial rose triumphantly on the banks of the Wabash. He saw a decaying industrial riverfront in Vincennes transformed into a state and national shrine. He wondered if the same could be done for St. Louis and its riverfront along the Mississippi. Smith wanted to return the St. Louis waterfront to its former glory and create “a lovely park reclaimed from riverside slums and factory refuse.” Thus the Gateway Arch idea was born.
Today, millions of people visit the Arch, ride to the top, and get a greater understanding of America’s western expansion, particularly Lewis and Clark. Yet, many do not realize that this monument had its origins in a monument to another Clark and the role that he and his frontiersmen played in helping the United States become a nation.
