**Coach Highlight- Nikko Reyes**
Nikko Reyes is a phenomenal wrestling and Brazilian jiujitsu athlete and coach to our kids and adults. Nikko was a very successful high school and college wrestler with many accomplishments. His transition from the wrestling world to BJJ has been very seamless and impressive. In 2023 he won 1st in Nogi Worlds. He currently teaches the Nogi Fundamentals class at PMA. We are proud to have him as part of our PMA family.
-What got you into BJJ?
Matt Smith got me into BJJ kind of involuntary, but I’m so glad he did. I was coaching wrestling at PMA and we had an in house tournament that he signed me up for. I could never thank him enough.
-How many years have you been training?
5 years of training in BJJ, but trained 20 years in wrestling prior.
-What do you like most about coaching?
I like coaching because I’m able to give back to the students. It’s really cool to see the techniques shown be used in live goes/competition.
-What is your favorite bjj move?
My favorite BJJ move is an arm bar.
-What is the one thing about your bjj journey that stands out or is the most memorable?
Winning nogi worlds.
-If you could give advice to your younger self what would it be?
Advice to my younger self would be to have fun. It’s just a game.
-How do you become sufficient at a new move?
At first try to figure out the similarities of the new move you’re learning to other techniques you have mastered. Second you have to drill it. Drillers are killers.
-What advice would you give to new students?
Advice to new students is to just keep coming. I always say “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” It takes a long time to be proficient in anything. Don’t be discouraged.
-What advice would you give to students who have been doing bjj but are feeling stuck?
My advice would be to maybe try another martial art that we offer to supplement your BJJ training.

**Coach Highlight- Krystal Alexander**
Krystal is not only a great jiujitsu practitioner and the Women’s Jiujitsu Coach, but also an all around amazing athlete and serves our country in the military. We are fortunate to have her as part of our PMA family.
-What got you into bjj?
Right before my deployment I was listening to the Jocko Podcast and he spoke very highly of Jiu Jitsu. I had to wait until I returned, but it was worth the wait!
-How many years have you been training?
6 years
-What do you like most about coaching?
Continually learning how to say the right things to convey what my brain and body knows and seeing the light bulb moment of someone grasping the move and applying it.
-What is your favorite bjj move?
Guillotine
-What is the one thing about your bjj journey that stands out or is the most memorable?
Teaching women’s class is one of my favorite things and also getting to share the journey with Meredith.
-If you could give advice to your younger self what would it be?
Stay patient and consistent and all of the hard work will pay off.
-How do you become sufficient at a new move?
Keep practicing it as much as possible.
-What advice would you give to new students?
Don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed for a while, I think we all still have those days. Also showing up to class doesn’t mean you have to go hard every single time. Listen to your body. Sometimes just drilling is the best thing.
-What advice would you give to students who have been doing bjj but are feeling stuck?
Try different coaches, classes, or rolling with new people. Sometimes seeing someone else play or teach a different game from yours could spark interest in learning a whole new system. Also, give yourself plenty of grace! Jiu Jitsu is hard!
** Coach Highlight- Eduardo Crema**
Coach Ed has been with PMA as a student and coach for many years. He has been a pivotal part in the success of PMA and a huge influence in many students BJJ journeys. 🥋
-What got you into BJJ?
I wrestled in high school so looked fun
-How many years have you been training? 16 years
-What do you like most about coaching?
Gym members usually become good friends; some I would call family.
-What is your favorite bjj move?
Omoplata the world
-What is the one thing about your bjj journey that stands out or is the most memorable?
Getting my blue belt, it was a surprise and something I never thought I could achieve.
-If you could give advice to your younger self what would it be?
Don’t overtrain
-How do you become sufficient at a new move?
Take drilling seriously, start doing it on people less skilled than you then work your way up.
-What advice would you give to new students?
Hard things like BJJ make your life better. Don’t quit because it’s too hard.
-What advice would you give to students who have been doing bjj but are feeling stuck?
People figured out your game, plateaus are normal get proficient at something else. Learn to lose everyday.
