Did you know that Jack Durrance established two of Wyoming’s seven 50 Classic Climbs of North America? In 1937 he completed the lower extension of Glen Exum’s line up the upper South Ridge of the Grand Teton. The following year he climbed what proved to be the easier and more aesthetic alternative to the original Wiessner route on Devils Tower. Interestingly, Durrance and Wiessner joined forces and ultimately had a major falling out on the first American expedition to K2. The feud between them became one of the first great controversies in American mountaineering - and to think it all started with Durance’s choice of a more elegant line up Devils Tower!
Come climb a piece of American climbing history with us on the Tower! You’ll surely be amazed at how these routes were scaled in the late 1930s, especially given the technology of the time and how difficult these routes feel for the grade. They don’t make 5.7s like this anymore 😂!

50 million years ago, a huge stratovolcano larger than Mt. Rainier formed in northwest Wyoming. Its basaltic flows ended up making up a large swath of the northern Absaroka Mountains. After many eruptions and extensive glaciation, the central vent complex of the volcano is now composed of two beautiful peaks, Sunlight Peak and Stinkingwater Peak.
These two peaks are not exceptionally high by Wyoming standards and as such don’t see a lot of attention by mountaineers compared to 12 and 13ers to the south. Despite being overlooked, Sunlight and Stinkingwater are not too difficult to access thanks to old copper mining roads and make for awesome technical mountaineering objectives in late spring and early summer when they still hold snow and ice. These peaks are flanked by steep glaciers and bisected by long and narrow ridges that are riddled by steep gendarmes, icy chimneys, and sizable cornices that require a complex set of skills to navigate. As such the ridge climbs of Sunlight and Stinkingwater are excellent training grounds for technical snow, ice, and rock climbing in the greater ranges as well as worthy alpine objectives in themselves.
Lots of learning and growth this week with .grant and as they prepped for bigger technical mountaineering ventures to come and climbed the Northeast Ridge of Sunlight with . Link in bio to learn more about climbing in this special part of the state.
Happy Memorial Day from 🇺🇸’s first National Monument! Today we’re privileged to honor those who’ve fallen in service to this country at this most iconic part of the western American landscape. And we want to remind folks that in just a few days, the voluntary climbing closure will take place for entirety of June. That’s a time when many native tribes honor and memorialize their forebears at this sacred place. Devils Tower/Mato Tapila means many things to many people and we encourage everyone to respect that!

We are privileged to offer custom guided alpine climbing trips on Pilot Peak (11,699′), one of the most aesthetic but demanding summits of any mountain in Wyoming. Pilot Peak is one of the more advanced alpine climbing objectives that we guide as it requires a steep off-trail approach, camping overnight in bear country, moving on snow and loose rock, and climbing on committing, consequential terrain. That said, if you already have experience alpine climbing on technical objectives and want a proper challenge in a more remote area, Pilot Peak is one of the most unique and rewarding objectives you’ll find in any mountain range in the US. The iconic nature of the mountain coupled with the challenging nature of the climbing makes for a complete package that you won’t soon forget.

Pretty dang lucky to witness a new milestone in Devils Tower climbing history this week. lead all the hard pitches of El Matador, some of them multiple times, without being able to see any of it. His strength, drive, composure, and positivity as he pushed his limits on this mega sandbag was above and beyond anything I’ve ever seen in the world of climbing. Big shoutout to for doing a pro job documenting this project and for the opportunity to have a front row seat. And thanks to for the recommendation!
