“We have been impressed by the commitment of Annapolis city leaders and the Annapolis Police Department community to this important work,” said MCRIC Director and UMD Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice Associate Professor Bianca Bersani. “It’s clear that APD is facing workload challenges and that there is a strong commitment from the entire APD community to identifying these challenges and thinking creatively about how best to address them.”

This time last week, 18 University of Maryland undergraduates in the inaugural cohort of the Laufer Democracy Internship Program presented their work with nonprofit organizations such as Pizza to the Polls, Vote Early Day and the Campus Vote Project.
Funded by Marsha Zlatin Laufer ’64 and Henry Laufer, the program is part of the nonpartisan, interdisciplinary Maryland Democracy Initiative (MDI), which combines expertise from the BSOS, the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, and School of Public Policy.

Albert P. Carey, a longtime executive at PepsiCo and supporter of the University of Maryland, recently made his second million-dollar gift to the Maryland Promise Program, which provides need-based scholarships for undergraduates from underserved populations from Maryland and Washington, D.C.

The Maryland Crime and Research Innovation Center (MCRIC) and the Center for Substance Use, Addiction, and Health Research (CESAR) were recently awarded $400,000 from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention and Policy to work with stakeholders in Allegany, Anne Arundel, Harford, Calvert, Saint Mary’s and Carroll counties to learn about each area's law enforcement diversion programs—designed to help people who may be struggling with substance use or mental health disorders get connected to care, rather than incarceration for low-level offenses.

The Global Ecosystems Dynamics Investigation—aka “GEDI," pronounced like “Jedi” in Star Wars—is officially back in action on the International Space Station! https://go.umd.edu/gedi2024
GEDI started collecting data critical for combatting climate change in 2018. Upon mission completion, the instrument was supposed to be burned in the atmosphere, but NASA decided to save it.
“We are thrilled that GEDI has resumed its scientific operations,” said Ralph Dubayah, GEDI’s principal investigator and a Distinguished University Professor in the UMD- Department of Geographical Sciences-Students & Alumni. “As we face escalating environmental challenges like droughts, fires, hurricanes, and deforestation, GEDI will be essential in monitoring these changes. We anticipate that its data will be invaluable in addressing these critical issues and promoting sustainability.”

Other undergraduate majors include African American studies, anthropology, environmental science and policy, geographical sciences, hearing and speech sciences, and sociology.
73% of BSOS Majors had at least one career-related internship as undergrads; 38% had three or more.
