Please join us in honoring Deputy Luke Humanik.

Medal of Valor Recipient

Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas Luke Humanik is the recipient of a Medal of Valor recently awarded by the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association.
The award was presented last Thursday night, January 25, 2024, at the Sheriffs’ Association winter conference in Columbia. The Medal of Valor is bestowed upon an officer who demonstrates exceptional courage in the line of duty.

Deputy Humanik was recognized for his actions during a shooting call which he soon learned involved an armed man who was threatening su***de. Deputy Humanik was the first deputy to arrive at the home. The young man and his family were experiencing financial difficulties, and the man had been drinking. Before deputies arrived, the man fired a shot from a handgun inside the home which did not injure anyone. As Deputy Humanik arrived on scene, the man stepped onto the front steps with the pistol pointed at his head. Other deputies arrived. The man walked out into the street and at one point sat down in the street with the pistol to his head. During the incident, the man fired the pistol into the air twice. The danger was multiplied when the man’s girlfriend ran out of the house and into the street with him. Deputies were able to get her out of harm’s way. Over the next ten to 12 minutes, Deputy Humanik continuously talked with the man in a calm, compassionate, and reassuring voice to let him know people cared about him and help was available for him. Through the rapport Deputy Humanik established with the man, he was able to convince him to lay down the pistol and walk away from it. The man was detained for his safety without incident or injury to anyone.

Sheriff Barry Faile nominated Deputy Humanik for the award. “After reviewing this incident, it was obvious that Luke recognized the gravity of the situation, yet he maintained his composure and relied upon his training as a deputy and a military police officer to bring this matter to a peaceful end with no injuries to anyone,” said Sheriff Faile. “Deputy Humanik was concerned about and took appropriate actions to ensure the safety of the man, his girlfriend, his fellow deputies, and citizens in the area. He embodies what it means to be a true public servant, and through his bravery he clearly put himself last in order to save this young man’s life.”

Attached are photographs from the presentation of Deputy Humanik, center, Patrol Captain Eric Jaillette, left, and Sheriff Faile.
