Trick or Treat!
Reggie is super proud of his costume this year. Can anyone guess what he dressed up as?
Happy Halloween! 🎃
Ambassador Wither the Eastern Rat Snake was a little jealous that she was left out of yesterday's installment of spooky week. Of course we could never forget about Wither. She gets a feature all her own.
Wither came to us several years ago as an unwanted pet who found her way to a police station where she stayed for several months. Although, the officers tried, they weren't really sure how to care for her. Wither grew quite a lot the first year she was with us and now she is huge, approx. 6 feet long and living her best life in a large enclosure where she can stretch out and explore. Please show Wither some love and don't mention the pumpkin on her face. She's a little sensitive.
Spooky week continues with creatures of the night. Featuring Ambassador Ruby the Eastern Screech Owl, Ambassador Miles the Southern Flying Squirrel and and an adorable Hoary Bat that is currently in care. All three of these amazing animals are often stirring in the shadows. For flying squirrels specifically, you may never see them. The are quite stealthy and blend in very well with their surroundings.
It's spooky week! We would like to kick it off by introducing our newest ambassador. Meet Blue the Eastern Indigo Snake!
Of course, we don't think snakes are scary at all, but understand that some people do. What we find scary is this species classification on the endangered species list. Eastern indigo snakes are threatened throughout their range. Whether it be from habitat loss, over collection or vehicle strikes, this species needs our help and we are quite excited to have this little one on our team of animal ambassadors.
A little background on Blue. Blue is a captive bred snake who came out of the egg a little wonky. Blue has a slight deformity, but we think he/she is perfect just the way they are. Because of this deformity, the breeder chose to donate him/her to a non-profit who can help spread awareness for this amazing species. Welcome to the Nest Blue. There are so many people who have already fallen head over heels for you!
It's that time of year again! With hundreds of squirrels in our care we have completely depleted our supply of nuts. Can you help us restock?
We will gladly accept dry acorns (no green ones, or ones that have sprouted please), and only in the shell pecans, walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts.
Thank you for helping us keep our patients bellies full!
Interesting information
Not only do chickadees rely on insects for feeding their young, but an astonishing 96% of all terrestrial North American bird species rely on insects for at least part of their diets at some point throughout the life cycle. When we help insects by planting native plants and providing habitat, we are also helping birds! On World Migratory Bird Day, learn more about how you can protect insects to protect birds at the link below:

This little mourning dove said if I fits I sits as they snuggle up in their food dish. We have to admit that we are kind of jealous. A bowl full of seeds sounds like a nice foot massage.
We have had several people bringing us some things they are getting rid of due to not having power. We appreciate the thought but we are not taking meat or any fruits or vegetables that are not fresh or that we don't normally use. We thank you for thinking of us and we are sorry for the confusion but we have not posted anything about needing these items.
We hate for you to make the trip here so please double check before bringing to us.
Thank you for your continued support and we do have a list on our website of the types of fruits and vegetables that we can use.
The center does not have power which means our phone lines are also down, but we are still open and accepting patients. If you find an injured wild animal and can get it to us safely, please do. We will remain open until later this evening.
THIS SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2024!!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Pampered Chef fundraiser. Thanks to Yolanda Wardlaw, our Pampered Chef representative. We received a $253.56 check.
Turtles here, turtles there. We have turtles everywhere. Some with spots and some with stripes. Some with squiggles and some with a powerful bite. From hatchlings to adults, all have a story to tell and could use your help.
Turtles with severe injuries tend to take a long time to heal and often times stay in rehab for several months. With 122 turtles currently in care, and the weather getting cooler, we expect to overwinter the majority and could use your help. We desperately need UVB bulbs, basking bulbs, cascade filters, heating pads, eco earth and another stock tank.
Any help would be much appreciated and will go a long way in keeping our shelled friends comfortable throughout the cooler months.

If you are interested and have proven or can prove you have the ability to fulfil a role in this it could become a part-time or full time position.
Please email [email protected] if you are interested in helping fundraise in any capacity.
HELP! Our mealworm order was delayed and stuck in TN for a full day. When it finally arrived, we were left with 100,000 dead worms. We have another shipment on the way, but right now we are in desperate need of worms to feed our patients. We have gone around to pet stores and wild birds unlimited to buy what we can, which has set us back $500. What we could find wont even get us through the day. Please, if anyone can help, our patients bellies are hungry.
It was a great day learning from Dave Pauli , Wildlife Conflict Program Manager for Humane Society of the United States. Connecting with others in law enforcement, animal control and other rehabbers to learn humane methods of wildlife handling, and problem.solving wildlife issues. Our board president, Anne Palyok, board member Dr Jennifer Bonovich, Columbia City Shelter Vet and Janell Gregory, HSUS SC State Director posed for a picture with Dave.
Our Pampered chef fundraiser will be closing end of the week. Please consider placing an order and helping us earn some extra income.
Thanks to the SC Highway Patrol - https://www.facebook.com/scdps.pio/ and the SC DOT - https://www.facebook.com/SCDOT for stopping traffic this past Monday on I-20, so that we could rescue a couple of roosters who had been on the freeway since an accident on Friday! One of the DOT personnel must've been a wide receiver in the past judging by the way he grabbed one of the birds right out of the air! Things always go better when we work together!
Unusual patient alert!
A couple of days ago there was a knock on the door for what we assumed were wood ducks or mallards that were found all alone in Columbia. Imagine our surprise when we opened the box and saw black-bellied whistling ducklings looking up at us. We haven't seen this species in the midlands and are perplexed as to how these babies ended up here. After looking up their range, it appears that their presence in this area is quite rare.
These babies are beyond adorable and have a personality to boot! We added an image of an adult for reference. Let us know if you've seen these fantastical goose like ducks in your area, especially the midlands!
It is not uncommon for birds to be blown off course during massive storms like hurricane Debby. Unfortunately we suspect that was the case for this juvenile white ibis. This stunning individual was found in North Augusta this afternoon which is pretty far from it's range. It had been observed sitting in the same spot for several hours and was able to be captured. Sadly, this young bird has a badly fractured leg that will be evaluated by our veterinarian in the morning. Stabilization is in place as well as pain management and fluid therapy. We sure hope this beautiful bird can recover and be returned to its natural habitat.
Please consider helping us get this bird home. Any donation, even a dollar helps!

Hatching is egg-hausting work!
A few months ago a very kind person brought us a common snapping turtle from Georgia that had been hit by a car. Unfortunately injuries were quite severe and mom passed shortly after arrival. During examination we learned that she was full of eggs. We can only imagine that she was on her way to lay and got hit by a car in the process. Although we couldn't save momma, we at least could save her eggs. Her legacy will live on and today is their big day! Welcome to world little ones!
Hi, I'm new here. I'm super scared after being chewed on by a dog, but they told me I'll be okay and will be home before I know it. The food here is actually pretty good and the accommodations aren't bad either. Thank you to the person who helped me and thank you to my caregivers. I'm looking forward to going home soon and appreciate the help provided to get me there.
