Demand Reduction Team Partners with Truckers Against Trafficking at "Over the Edge" Event 🤝

Last month, volunteers from She Has A Name’s (SHAN) Demand Reduction Team partnered with the national organization, Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), to provide demand reduction resources and education at their “Freedom Drivers Trailer” during the "Over the Edge to Fight Child S*x Trafficking" event. Organized by Gracehaven, this annual event raises funds and awareness for the trafficking and exploitation of minors. Participants each raise a minimum of $1,250 to rappel 26 stories down The Chase Tower in downtown Columbus, bringing attention to the more than 1,100 youth who fall victim to s*x trafficking in Ohio every year.

Gracehaven directly serves about 120 individuals and reaches over 4,000 minors and adults through prevention education. The event's goal is to move these young people from survivor to thriver, providing hope and healing. Over the Edge 2025 will be held on June 13. For more information, contact Kate Sullivan at [email protected].

This collaboration was a great outreach opportunity for our Demand Reduction Team, dedicated to spreading awareness and resources related to reducing the demand for human trafficking.

Join us in celebrating Courtney's 8th SHANiversary! She's worn many hats starting in 2014 as an events and communications volunteer starting before joining the staff team and Development Director in 2016. Today she serves as Executive Director, leading the staff team and SHAN's education programs.

How did you get started at SHAN?
My friend David invited me on a Tuesday to photograph a SHAN event that Thursday. Turns out it was the first gala at the Bluestone.

What have been some of your favorite SHAN events?
Canoe for a Cause at Trapper John's, the Clothing Swap, and the Fair & Free Workshop

What are you looking forward to in the next year at SHAN?
We're bringing back the Fair & Free Workshop this fall! Conscious consumerism was one of the first ways I responded to human trafficking. This event makes it fun and approachable.

46 people participated in our Solicitor Education Program on May 18th. This one-day class introduces first-time s*x buyers to resources for healing on their own journeys, many of which could include lived experience of trauma or abuse.

Discussion included:
- Personal Accountability
- A Survivor's Story
- Healing from Personal Trauma
- Healthy Relationships
- Public Health & STI's
- Human Trafficking 101

We facilitate this program as part of our vision to see all those impacted by human trafficking restored into society and thriving in healthy community. $8,800 in net proceeds were reinvested towards our survivor care programming.

You might not realize these smiles were captured at this month's Trauma Responsive Care Training! Together we learned about trauma in the mind and body. Thank you to our panelists who brought therapist, mentor and survivor perspectives on the important topics of boundaries and self-care. We finished the evening practicing healthy coping strategies. The feedback confirmed our feelings--we're glad you learned with us!

🥳 Celebrating Ashley's graduation! Earning her Bachelor's with support from a SHAN scholarship, she's already obtained her LSW. Next for her is a Master's degree and working in a clinical care setting. In her own words with permission to share:

"I started this journey with a 1.5 GPA and faith. I was also homeless living in abandoned homes seven years ago. But, I also have peace, stillness, and healing. All of this is possible, because of people like you and organizations like SHAN! Thank you for believing in me long before I believed in myself."

It is an honor to walk alongside people like Ashley as they pursue their dreams and degrees 🎓

Yesterday our ED Courtney testified at the Statehouse. SB 214 hopes to expand expungement opportunities for survivors of human trafficking. The limits of the current statute present a hurdle to survivors as they seek safe housing, stable jobs, and education. She joined leaders from the
, CATCH Court, and two survivors in providing expert perspective for members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
