2024 APHA Conference: OCMH Staff take an opportunity to engage with Dr. Camara Jones, past president of APHA and the OCMH Minority Health Month Keynote Speaker in 2022
2024 APHA Conference: Director Dawson and Program Manager Candace James attended the APHA Panel Discussion on “Unequal Treatment Revisited” moderated for Dr. Brian Smedley who was the OCMH Minority Health Month Keynote Speaker in 2017.
On October 23, 2024, the Columbus Metropolitan Club hosted a forum “Rx for Equity: Creating Access to Healthcare in Central Ohio.
Director Dawson had the distinct pleasure of moderating a panel discussion with four outstanding public health leaders. The panel featured Dr. Chyke Doubeni, Kate Tullio, MPH, MS, and Carrie Harris-Muller and Amy Rohling-McGee. The audience enjoyed a robust discussion on current efforts and potential solutions to ensure that everyone can reach their full health potential. This was a unique opportunity to share how systems are working together to achieve equity by ensuring foundational community input, using data informed strategies, and challenging the systems we impact to remove historic structural barriers.
OCMH staff Director Dawson and Program Specialist Giselle Lindsay are joined by Director Fatima Perkins of the OCMH Research Evaluation Enhancement Program to provide a poster presentation on our OCMH Lupus Optimal Health Support Programs.
Director Dawson greets AHPA President Ella Greene-Moton and Keynote Speaker Dr. Reed Tuckson
The Ohio Commission on Minority Health staff members Director Angela Dawson, Program Manager Candace James and Program Specialist Giselle Lindsay are attending the 2024 American Public Health Association Annual Conference to present on three OCMH grant programs.

National Hispanic Heritage Awareness Month!
September is National Hispanic Heritage Awareness Month
"Latinos have had a lasting impact on our history and the health of our nation. We are the doctors, nurses, community health workers, and home care workers who help treat you when you are sick or struggling; the innovators and scientists testing the boundaries of what is possible and discovering new treatments and cures; the leaders who champion a society where everyone has access to quality, affordable health care – and strive every day to make it possible.
For all the progress we have made, there is still a lot of work to be done. Latinos are less likely than people of other racial and ethnic backgrounds to have health insurance. Many Latinos feel disconnected from our medical system, due to cultural and language barriers, and a lack of Latino physicians — and those barriers can have a real impact on their overall health. The su***de rate among Latinos continues to rise. Cancer remains the leading cause of death for Latinos. Latinos are at greater risk of developing diabetes, and at a younger age. We must not hesitate for a moment to take on these challenges and close the persistent health equity gaps that remain.
The Latino community total more than 65 million across the United States today, and Latinos of every generation continue to help make our country strong and prosperous. As we celebrate the Latino community, and recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month, let us continue to invest in the health and well-being of Latinos nationwide."
Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more.
Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact Latinas and Latinos have had on the United States for generations. The Latino presence in America spans centuries, predating Spain’s colonization of what is now part of the United States, and they have been an integral part of shaping our nation since the Revolutionary War. Through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Treaty of Paris that followed the Mexican-American and Spanish-American wars, the United States gained territories in the Southwest and Puerto Rico. This incorporated the people of this area into the United States and further expanded the presence of Hispanic Americans.
Today, the Latino Population in the United States today is over 60 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This makes up 18.9% of the total population and is the largest racial or ethnic group. Latinos continue to help fuel our economy and enrich our nation as entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, entertainers, scientists, public servants, and much more.
