The Ohio Nurses Association is a powerful network of registered nurses who are committed to advancing nursing.
Formed in 1904, the Ohio Nurses Association is a powerful network of registered nurses who are committed to advancing nursing through education, political action and workplace advocacy. “While the potential agreement between Steward Health and MPT to keep Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital and Trumbull Regional Medical Center is a positive development, it is only a small step in the right direction,” said Rick Lucas, BSN, RN, CCRN, ONA President and Executive Director. “For these hospitals to remain viable and effectively serve the community, Steward Health must resume full operations immediately. The reduction in patient numbers at Hillside alone is staggering, going from 28 patients when the closure was announced to an anticipated 11 patients by the end of the weekend, underscoring the urgency of the patient care crisis unfolding in the Mahoning Valley.”
“In response to calls from ONA and other community leaders, Attorney General Yost has filed an objection to the closures,” said Lucas. “However, it is crucial for AG Yost and his office to stay actively engaged in this fight moving forward. We continue to urge Governor DeWine to take decisive action to ensure these hospitals remain open. We are calling on him to meet with stakeholders, support legislative efforts, and use his influence to advocate for the full resumption of services at Hillside and Trumbull. The future of healthcare in our community depends on it.”
Agreement in works between Steward, real estate company to potentially keep hospitals open Steward and MPT are working towards an agreement that would keep all Steward facilities outside of Massachusetts up and running if signed on September 10.
Rick Lucas BSN, RN, CCRN, ONA President & Executive Director, spoke yesterday at the Hillside and Trumbull Community Rally. “Hillside Rehabilitation and Trumbull Regional are more than just medical facilities; they are lifelines for countless families. Yet, Steward Health Care System, driven by nothing but corporate greed, is pushing to shut them down, abandoning the people they are supposed to serve."
Look 👀 at the community support received yesterday in Warren! People are devastated by the closing of Hillside Rehabilitation and Trumbull Regional Hospitals.

“After meeting with the Ohio Governor’s and Attorney General’s office, it’s clear no one is safeguarding our community or patients, which must change,” said Rick Lucas BSN, RN, CCRN, ONA President & Executive Director. “Steward’s closure is the final blow in a seven-year history of depriving the region access to vital care. It’s time to hold Steward—and other bad actors in the healthcare industry—accountable.

Although Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital is not due to close for 30 days, it will not be admitting patients beginning today, August 22, says Rick Lucas BSN, RN, CCRN, ONA President & Executive Director. “The loss of Hillside is going to immediately impact the community,” Lucas said.
Trumbull Regional and Hillside hospitals begin closing process In an unexpected blow to workers at Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Steward Health announced Wednesday that they are closing both facilities.
“It really should be a fundamental right and something that we expect here in the State of Ohio, that somebody wouldn’t have to drive 30, 60, 90 or more minutes to receive care and, you know, potentially have a bad outcome and not be able to receive emergency care, maternity care, cardiac care,” Rick Lucas BSN, RN, CCRN, ONA President & Executive Director.
ONA, which represents 22 nurses at Hillside Rehabilitation Center, issued the following statement that workers at the Howland facility were “blindsided” when they were told the facility was closing.
“The closure of Hillside is a tragic result of greed-driven hospital executives, backed by private equity, who prioritize their yachts and private jets over patient care,” Lucas said. “This decision leaves our community without crucial rehabilitation services and forces our dedicated team of nurses and health professionals into unemployment due to Steward’s unchecked greed.”

📢 The Ohio Nurses Association condemns the American Nurses Association’s proposal to unfairly blame union nurses for patient care during strikes. This undermines our professional integrity and fails to hold employers accountable. Read our letter urging a change.

Let OSU nurses celebrate Labor Day! Sign the petition to support our healthcare heroes and ensure their efforts are recognized.
Celebrating Labor Day within the hospital has been a vital tradition for boosting morale and fostering a sense of community and solidarity. OSU leadership's recent decision to move the event to an inconvenient location and deny the distribution of appreciation treats undermines their hard work and dedication. Allowing these celebrations to remain within the hospital is a simple yet powerful way to show that their commitment is valued and appreciated.

WAY TO GO, BETH & SARA! 🤩 They attended the AFT convention last week, in Houston, to represent Ohio Nurses. 🤜🤛
Beth and Sara representing at the AFT convention! Our fight for staffing continues!!!
’s focus has been on pursuing federal and state legislation and contract language that would require minimum staffing requirements to ensure that all disciplines and workers in healthcare could safely and fully deliver the quality of care that patients deserve.
"Our goals have been to have five bills introduced to state legislatures across the country. We got nine bills introduced,” said AFT Health Issues Director, Kelly Nedrow, adding that even though there wasn’t an expectation that bills would get passed, three were passed into law. ✊💥👏 AFT Nurses & Health Professionals
Code Red a success for AFT’s healthcare members The AFT’s Code Red campaign has been an overwhelming success for affiliates that have focused their energies on targeting inadequate staffing; workplace safety, training and infrastructure; and the accountability of healthcare corporations. Shameful, OSU upper management!
Hey OSUNO NURSES!!!
OSU Upper Management is at it again!!!😡
OSUNO has been rejected in hosting our Labor Day Event, WITHIN the hospital, to celebrate and honor all of your hard work! We were even stopped in dropping off pastry’s to units in lieu of them rejecting our location for the event.
We are outraged that while we LABOR in unsafe environments with unsafe patient ratios and inappropriate floats, that we aren’t even allowed to provide easily accessible food and treats to you all! You gotta love the respect and appreciation OSU “Leadership” shows us😒
📝Please sign our petition of solidarity to DEMAND OSU Leadership allow us to host our event that is well deserved and earned!! OSUNO unit organizers and board members will have the petitions!!! Please share/repost!
In solidarity! ✊🏽🩺💙
