Missing summer? PhD Student Emma Bouie spent her summer traveling! This summer, she participated in the Inundation Signatures on Rocky Coastlines Field Camp (ISROC)! Among many things, the students investigated evidence of high-energy events and former coastal infrastructure at Hams Bluff, St. Croix. Working in groups, they examined wave-emplaced boulders and captured photogrammetry for later analysis. Emma and her work show that SES has the earth as our classroom!

Meet SES PhD candidate Franco S. Sobrero, advised by Dr. Michael Bevis in geodetic sciences 📡🛰️📡Franco recently returned from the field, participating in The Central Andes Project. When asked about his research Franco says: “We measured what we call survey or campaign GNSS stations, which are passive benchmarks that we revisit as often as we can (maybe once a year). This way, we can densify the continuous GNSS network where it is sparse. In this case, we went to San Juan, Argentina (a zone that was affected by the Illapel and Maule, Chile earthquakes) 🌎Franco shows us that the earth is our classroom in SES!

🌍 Dive deep into the world of structural geology with Dr. Ashley Griffith at OSU! 🏔️ Students gain hands-on experience in rock mechanics while exploring the fascinating behavior of fractures in Earth’s crust. From understanding subsurface fluid flow to mitigating earthquake hazards, SES is training the next generation to study geological formations essential for both academics and practical applications.

Emma Bouie, a coastal geomorphologist and PhD student, conducted a field site visit last fall. During the 4-day survey, she studied the geomorphic evolution of coastal environments, specifically Lake Michigan's beaches and nearshore areas. Emma aims to apply the skills acquired from this experience to investigate the adverse effects of coastal erosion control structures on the downdrift shore of Lake Erie in Ohio. Her research emphasizes the drawbacks of these structures, providing valuable insights into the interactions between incident waves and coastal protective measures.

Meet SES geodetic PhD candidate Mara Figueroa Berrocá, advised by Dr. Demián Gómez. Mara recently returned from the field, participating in POLENET fieldwork ❄️ for the 2023-2024 season. When asked about her research, Mara said, “I performed maintenance to GNSS and seismic station networks 🛰️. I am a geodesist and geophysicist who uses GNSS observations to model surface deformation caused by megathrust earthquakes in South America.” Mara shows us that Earth is our classroom in SES!

Advances in soft robotics usher in a new era of scientific analysis: Dr. Ausich discusses new link between robotics and paleontology 01/18/2024

Professor William Ausich, a professor of earth sciences at The Ohio State University, envisions robots adapting to diverse tasks in understanding paleoecology and the behaviors of extinct organisms. Ausich's commentary in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences discusses a study on a soft robot called "Rhombot," mimicking an extinct echinoderm genus called Pleurocystites. The robot's movements on a simulated ancient seafloor align with predictions about the organisms' motions, providing insights into their behaviors. This innovative approach, known as paleobionics, combines robotics with paleontological principles, filling gaps in the fossil record and offering perspectives on evolutionary trends and survival strategies.

Advances in soft robotics usher in a new era of scientific analysis: Dr. Ausich discusses new link between robotics and paleontology ORIGINALLY POSTED BY OHIO STATE NEWS. Press release published by Tatyana Woodall ([email protected])Could robots, whose forms can be adapted to achieve almost any real-world task, soon be able to lend a hand in understanding the paleoecology tracing of extinct organisms?

A recent study, led by Jamey Stutz from The Ohio State University's Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, analyzed glacial deposits from Byrd Glacier's Lonewolf Nunataks, revealing rapid thinning around 8,000 years ago during the formation of the Ross Ice Shelf. Surface exposure ages from glacial erratic cobbles indicated initial thinning at ~15 ka, with accelerated thinning at ~8 ka. Ice sheet model simulations suggested changes in basal sliding regime, possibly linked to the Ross Ice Shelf's formation. The research, providing crucial benchmarks for Antarctic Ice Sheet models, will be featured in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms.

Support for this research was provided by Kenn Borek Air, Antarctica New Zealand, Antarctic Research Centre, School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Te-Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, NZ Antarctic Science Platform and Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO)

About the School

The faculty and students in the School of Earth Sciences investigate the history of our planet, its material structure and resources, and the processes that have driven its evolution and continue to shape our environments. We study the Earth’s interior and surface, its oceans, freshwater and glaciers, its atmosphere and outer space, and their interactions with each other and with the biosphere.

We are concerned with the responsible utilization of natural resources, issues of sustainability, as well as the mitigation of natural and man-made hazards and global change. We read Earth’s recent and ancient history in its rocks, fossils, landscapes, and its gravity. We probe and characterize the Earth system using satellites, in situ and laboratory measurements, physical theories, and numerical models.

We conduct field work worldwide from Antarctica to the Arctic and from coral reefs to mountain peaks. Our scientific activities and interests span an enormous range of temporal and spatial scales. We create and disseminate knowledge about our planet, develop new techniques to explore and understand it, and share this knowledge and our technical skills with our colleagues, our students, and society.
