🥳 Cheers to mechanical engineering major Avi Balakirsky & computer science and engineering major Brian Foster for earning Tau Beta Pi scholarships!

Hats off to the 2024 Tau Beta Pi Scholars!

This year, from 1,328 applications that were submitted (over 800 more than last year!), 253 Scholars were chosen despite the odds. These students were selected based on the competitive criteria of high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession. Most recipients will receive a cash award of $2,000 for one year of senior engineering study and a few will receive $1,000 for one semester.

Ohio State students gain work experience through summer internships 08/27/2024

Funded by generous alumni philanthropy, students interned this summer at startup companies and small businesses. Truly a win-win!
https://news.osu.edu/ohio-state-students-gain-work-experience-through-summer-internships/
They gained practical work experience this summer by participating in the Wheeler and Wolstein Internship Program. The students made presentations highlighting the projects they worked on at central Ohio companies during an Aug. 9 event at The Ohio State University’s Student Entrepreneurs’ Center, home of the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship.

The program provides scholarship funding to undergraduate and graduate students in internships with startup companies and small businesses. Students are matched with organizations offering project-based internships throughout Ohio State’s summer term (May-August).

The Wheeler and Wolstein Internship Program is funded by contributions from the late Tom Wheeler, an industrial engineer and Ohio State alumnus, and the Bert and Iris Wolstein Foundation.

“The dollars that they give go 100% to allowing students to have an internship that our startup companies and small businesses don’t have to pay for,” Keenan Center Senior Director Cheryl Turnbull said. “It’s a win-win for our companies and for our students. Students get a great experience, and the companies have access to this awesome talent.”

NSF-funded center to drive development of US natural rubber industry 08/22/2024

$26M in federal funding will support creation of a National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Center at The Ohio State University to jumpstart natural rubber production in the U.S. & enhance workforce development to fuel the domestic industry.
https://engineering.osu.edu/news/2024/08/nsf-funded-center-drive-development-us-natural-rubber-industry

The funding will create the “Transformation of American Rubber through Domestic Innovation for Supply Security” (TARDISS) ERC.

TARDISS, composed of academic partners and supported by industry stakeholders, will lead fundamental research supporting the creation of a “Silicon Valley of Domestic Natural Rubber Production,” said Judit Puskas, a professor of food, agricultural and biological engineering (FABE) who was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2023. As principal investigator on the grant, Puskas will lead the center along with its director, Ajay Shah, also a professor in FABE. Katrina Cornish, Ohio State professor emeritus and current director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service and Arid Land Agricultural Research Center, will serve as an external adviser to TARDISS.

The ERC will harness the power of nature, creating bridges between engineering, biology and agriculture, to revolutionize alternative natural rubber production from domestic crops: guayule, the TK “rubber” dandelion and mountain gum. The initiative will also help create jobs, train a new and diverse engineering and agricultural workforce, and ease supply chain issues by building a domestic rubber supply.

This is the second NSF-funded ERC to be established at Ohio State in the last two years. The Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution ERC (NSF HAMMER Engineering Research Center) was awarded funding in 2022. With today’s announcement, Ohio State joins only a small number of universities to have led simultaneous awards.

In the new Pelotonia Research Center, engineers collaborate with biologists, physicians, data scientists and others to find solutions to daunting health challenges every day: https://engineering.osu.edu/news/2024/07/new-home-health-care-innovators

Twelve engineering faculty have dedicated labs in the building. Researchers work in neighborhoods focused on innovations in cancer, gene- and cell-based therapies, cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine, neurological disease, artificial intelligence and more.

The five-story, 305,000-square-foot laboratory was the first new building to open in Carmenton, the university’s innovation district, in May 2023. Equipped with the cutting-edge technologies and resources critical for researchers working across disciplines to accelerate discoveries, the center will ultimately house over 100 labs and up to 1,000 faculty, staff and students.
