A wonderful day capping off a Fantastic Year! It was my honor serving as President of the Rotary Club of Conyers 2023-2024 Year. And now it is even a greater pleasure passing the Gavel to President Bryan Hilburn.

Club members have been rather busy with Rotary District 6910 District Conference, club meetings, inducting new members, fabulous speakers and more!!

This week: we heard from Deputy Commissioner Thomas Barnard from Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Georgia DNR.

We also inducted new Rotary member, Dr. Robert Hughes.

Next week: it’s time for the Rotary Club of Conyers Golf Tournament, so no meeting on Thursday!

Walter Rabon currently serves as the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Georgia DNR and will be our speaker on Thursday.

Regina Cziniel is the student we sponsored through the Georgia Rotary Student Program this year. She comes from Hungry and has been studying at The University of Georgia the past year. Regina shared some of the adventures she has been on and what she has learned about her year living in the United States.

We celebrated a major achievement of Dr. Al Myers, who has been involved with GRSP and has donated a cumulative total of $10,000 to the program.

We also presented Rockdale House for Men and Rockdale House for Women with checks to support their work.

Family Promise of NewRock was also presented with a check to support the work they provide to families in need.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of our community members who were affected by the tornado 🌪️. We’re grateful for how the community has come together to help each other and that there were no major injuries to anyone in our community.

Our speaker was a little crappy 💩 - not really, but we learned a lot about colorectal health and preventing cancers of the colon, pancreas and liver. Thank you Dr. Aburime!

We also presented checks to some very worthy community organizations who do amazing things in our community!

Refuge Pregnancy Center provides parenting classes, supplies and healthcare to parents needing their services.

Hills Academy is a private school for young men and emphasizes leadership and accountability. They are also home to our .

Lunch will be prepared by culinary students and we’ll check out the various pathway classroom labs!

This tour will show us what all our school system is preparing our future workforce to do in our community!

We have an exciting speaker for our meeting this week!

John F. King was sworn in as Georgia’s Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner by Governor Brian Kemp on July 1, 2019, becoming the first Hispanic statewide official in state history.

Before his appointment, Commissioner King served in various law enforcement positions, beginning as an City of Atlanta Police Department officer in 1985. He culminated as City of Doraville Police Department Chief of Police from 2002 to 2019 after working his way up from Detective. While at the Atlanta Police Department, King received the Chief’s Blue Star for being injured in the line of duty as a result of a criminal attack with a firearm.

In addition to his former roles in the Atlanta and Doraville Police Departments, King served as a Major General in the U.S. Army National Guard assigned to Norad and U.S. Northern Command. In his 41-year National Guard career, King deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. King celebrated his retirement from service in February of 2023.

King received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in criminal justice and public administration from Brenau University and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He was a graduate of class #229 in the FBI National Academy-Quantico, VA.

Regina Cziniel, 24 from Hungary, is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Social Circle, Rotary Club of Loganville, Rotary Club of Conyers and
Rotary Club of Monroe, District 6910. She always wanted to experience living in a foreign country that she had only seen in the movies. She aspires to work in media and has a passion for music and is taking courses Spanish and social media content production.
Liam Jackson, 18 from the United Kingdom, plans to pursue a career in foreign or economic affairs. Liam is currently studying Wealth Management, Personal Financial Management Principles of Real Estate, Astronomy, and Horsemanship. Liam is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hartwell, Rotary Club of Madison County, and Rotary Club of Elberton, District 6910.
Susanna Malmgren, 20 from Sweden, is studying to become an engineer or industrial product designer. One day she hopes to design and build her own home. After her year in Georgia, she plans to take “all the knowledge with me back to Sweden and teach people here about the importance of bringing different nations together since people with different backgrounds and strengths complete each other. “Nothing is worth more than the friends, connections, and memories I’ve made during my year with the Georgia Rotary Student Program. I’ll truly be forever grateful.” Susanna is sponsored by the Classic City of Athens Rotary Club, Oconee County Rotary Club and Rotary Club of Athens, District 6910.
Hedvig Rask, 20 from Sweden, is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Griffin, District 6900. She is enjoying her time at UGA where she is taking Italian, Spanish, Astronomy, Horseback riding and other courses and was named a Presidential scholar for fall 23 term. Hedvig is involved with an intramural soccer team. Hedvig is working to become a veterinarian.
“I would like to work internationally,” she said, “I would love to help preserve wildlife and to help rebuild endangered populations.”
Gabriel Tavares, 22 from Maringá, Paraná, Brazil, is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rockdale County, Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties, Rotary Club of Covington, and Morgan County Rotary Club, District 6910. Gabriel enjoys practicing, watching or discussing sports, specifically tennis, basketball and soccer. He plans to work as an electrical engineer in a large enterprise and defines success as the ability to “always be happy in every job, adventure or experience, truly enjoying each moment that life may bring.” Gabriel is enjoying his time at UGA, and he states that there are always events happening almost every week at the campus, a huge sports complex and so many interesting things you can spend your day.
