We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Robert Carnochan, whose passion for music education and conducting left a lasting mark on students and colleagues.
Since joining the Frost School of Music in 2015, Carnochan served as Chair of Instrumental Performance, Director of Bands, and Music Director/Conductor of the Frost Wind Ensemble. Last month, his peers honored him with the Phillip Frost Award for Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship—our institution's highest recognition for outstanding faculty and leadership.
“Rob Carnochan was a peerless conductor and musical artist, and an inspirational leader to every student and colleague he touched,” said Dean Shelton G. “Shelly” Berg. “We have lost a giant in the wind band world.”
His dedication to music and commitment to nurturing future generations of musicians will forever be remembered. We extend our deepest sympathies to Carnochan's family, friends, and the many students and colleagues who were fortunate to have known him.

Congratulations to Hongxi Li, our third-year DMA student of Dr. Naoko Takao, for her incredible recent performances at the Daejeon International Music Festival in South Korea! 🎉 !
Hongxi shared the stage with acclaimed Austrian cellist Attila Pasztor, with whom she performed an unforgettable duo recital. Their stunning collaboration garnering critical acclaim and received glowing praise from the audience.🙌 Following her success in South Korea, Hongxi continued to shine with Pasztor during a successful solo/duet recital tour across China, with stops in Yanji, Changchun, and Jinan. Each performance was met with overwhelming praise and recognition. 🎶
Once again, we are so proud to have such brilliant students, and we look forward to more exciting achievements from our department! 🎵👏

✨Professor Kenner performed at the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall with solo works by Chopin on a period piano, as well as Haydn‘s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 77 No. 2, with the world-renowned string quartet ”Quatuor Mosaïques“ and double bassist Grzegorz Frankowski.

Shuguang‘s rendition of Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony, conducted by Alison Norris, exemplified the theme of the concert, ”Divinity and the Cosmos: A Genderqueer Exploration of Messiaen‘s Turangalila-Symphony,“ showcasing his brilliant techniques and amazing musicianship.🥳👍🏻

Meet Priscila Navarro (Class of 2022 KPED DMA)
Congratulations to Priscila on winning the 2023 Astral Artist Fellowship Competition and officially joined AstralArtists!!
In the same year, she joined the faculty at Whitworth University as the new Director of Keyboard Studies! Huge Congrats!!
Peruvian pianist Priscila Navarro performs solo recitals, chamber works, and a large selection of concerti with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. Her talent has been widely recognized and she has been awarded the first prize at several international competitions, including the Liszt-Garritson International Competition in Baltimore, Maryland, Beethoven Sonata Competition in Tennessee, Chopin International Competition of Texas, Artist Series of Sarasota, Imola City Awards, Italy, and the Heida Hermanns International Music Competition.
Priscila made her Carnegie Hall solo recital debut in 2013 and will return there twice in 2022. She received a Special Bach prize at the International City of Vigo Competition in Spain, where she was one of five finalists from over 400 participating pianists, with a jury presided by Martha Argerich. As a chamber musician, Priscila regularly performs with a wide variety of musicians. She performed in several cities in Peru with violist Jodi Levitz, viola professor at the University of Miami. Priscila forms a piano duet with Dr.Michael Baron. Their first album is set to release in December with the MSR Classics label, with a Carnegie Hall premiere concert in March 2022.
Priscila holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the Frost School of Music, where she also completed Masters and Artist Diploma degrees as a student of Santiago Rodriguez and Kevin Kenner.
Besides her busy performance career, Priscila is a passionate pedagogue and has been on the jury at several international competitions, including the Chopin International Competition for Latin American pianists, and the Heida Hermanns International Competition. Priscila is the current artistic director for the Parnassus Music Society.Last year, they hosted the first International Piano Competition Parnassus Music, an event born of her initiative to showcase and promote talented Latin American pianists.

Meet one of our most distinguished Star Alumni:
Asiya Korepanova (class of 2017 MKP AD and MKP DMA 2016)
The only pianist in the world who performed the complete Rachmaninoff solo piano works within the composer's 150th-anniversary year of 2023. Asiya Korepanova is a pianistic powerhouse hailed as a " tremendously gifted pianist who exhibits a singular affinity for Rachmaninoff's Russian romantic idiom and possesses the blazing technique to fully realize his distinctive scores" (South Florida Classical Review). She is also the only pianist currently performing Liszt's 24 Etudes as a single program and one of few to tout a concerto list that features over 60 works, Asiya Korepanova is a pianistic powerhouse, who is also highly recognized for her work as a transcriber, composer, visual artist, and poet, reflecting her uncompromising dedication to the arts.
Asiya's historic solo piano transcriptions of Richard Strauss' 'Ein Heldenleben', Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata, Mussorgsky's 'Songs and Dances of Death', and many others, have given her a place among today's formidable transcribers.
She creates a series of multimedia projects featuring original poetry and visual art that serve as an interpretive commentary to each movement in a particular cycle of piano works. Examples include List's Transcendental Etudes, Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Tchaikovsky's 18 Morceaux, Op. 72, and Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition'.
Most recently, Asiya premiered her latest piano quintet work
'I marvel at the sky', commissioned by the Third Dimension Music Festival in Astoria, OR, and published the score of her Rachmaninoff Cello sonata transcription. Her Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Poéme, was released in its premiere recording, performed by Thomas Giles and Liana Pailodze Harron. Asiya eagerly anticipates the premiere of her latest transcription of the Manfred Symphony by Peter Tchaikovsky in January, 2023.
She will debut her signature recital program at the Merkin Concert Hall in New York on February 21, 2023.

Our distinguished faculty: Prof. Santiago Rodriguez, along with Asiya Korepanova, one of our most renowned star alumna, performed an astonishing four hand showcase at the Knight Center for Music Innovation's grand opening gala.
Aisya also preformed a brilliant Rachmaninoff solo and was awarded the first-ever Frost School of Music Centennial Medal alongside Frost Alumni legends such as Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada, Dawn Lewis, and Sandra Lopez Neill.
Held at the Frost School of Music campus, the Knight Center for Music Innovation celebration gala was a vibrant and historic event that brought together our community in a festive atmosphere, which Dean Shelton " Shelly" Berg recalled as a " worldwide Frost school family night." Featuring a variety of activities, from a private showing of multi-media visual and audio history of the Frost School at the Thomas D.
Hormel Music Innovation Stage, a lineup of performances at the Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Recital Hall, and the award ceremony of the first-ever Frost Centennial Medals.
The evening celebrated the power and strength of coming together to support the next generation's creativity, talent, and musical excellence. We look forward to continuing to shape the future of music, sharing our vision with the world, providing an innovative platform for our students to create, and bringing our community together.
✨2023 Fall MKP Piano Department Faculty Highlights✨
In the first week of November 2023, Our amazing faculties: Dr. Naoko Takao and Prof. Kevin Kenner contributed a brilliant four-hand performance during the week of the grand opening celebration of Knight Center for Music Innovation at Frost School of Music.
This performance was on live and featured at the big screen of the mesmerizing, brand new WindowCast System. Light up with night and bringing music to life, the HD Audio and Video from a 20X40-foot window of this brilliant feature on the plaza of the Knight Center for Music Innovation brings our community of all ages together to enjoy live performances.
Many Piano students participated in this event and watched this fantastic performance of our faculties from the WindowCast and it was for sure a wonderful experience for all!
this event at the Opening Celebration with Frost School of Music students and faculty featured a nearly three-hour program including classical, jazz, and pop genres.
It was hosted by Corin Overland, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Serona Elton, Associate Dean of Administration, and Shannon de l'Etoile, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, this musical extravaganza was the ideal opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of our students and world-class faculty.
We are delighted to announce that the Chopin Foundation of the U.S. has established a registered permanent endowment, The Frost Chopin Academy and Festival Endowment Fund, at the Frost School of Music.
Supporting a shared mission of helping young, talented American pianists and making classical music, and above all, the music of Chopin accessible to everyone, the $100,000 Endowment Fund ensures that the Frost Chopin Festival lives on.

Congratulations to (Da Jin Kim, Adrienne Williams, and Sally Kim) who recently won the “Horszowski Trio Prize” in the 50th Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the largest and longest-running chamber music competition in the United States. The prize was awarded to the top-ranking piano trio consisting of piano, violin, and cello. On top of the cash prize, they will be invited to the Mimir Festival in the summer of 2024 to work with the Horszowski Trio and other distinguished faculty members.
