As we are encouraged to spend more time in the kitchen and less time ordering or eating out, let’s breakdown why knowing what goes Into your food matters. I’m zooming in on a topic that seems to get a lot of attention, seed oils. Continue reading below for a breakdown on which oils to avoid and replace with others that are better for our health.

Seed oils, often marketed as "healthy" cooking oils, have become a staple in many households. However, recent research has shed light on the potential negative impact of these oils on our health, particularly in terms of causing inflammation in the body. In this post, we'll explore why seed oils may be detrimental to your health and what you can do to make healthier choices.

1. Imbalance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
One of the main reasons seed oils can lead to inflammation is the imbalance of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. While both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential for the body, they need to be in the right balance. Seed oils, such as soybean, corn, and sunflower oils, are extremely high in omega-6 fatty acids, which, when consumed in excess, can promote inflammation.

2. Pro-inflammatory Eicosanoids:
Omega-6 fatty acids from seed oils are metabolized in the body to produce eicosanoids, signaling molecules that can have pro-inflammatory effects. Excessive consumption of omega-6-rich seed oils can lead to an overproduction of these pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, contributing to chronic inflammation.

3. Oxidative Stress:
Seed oils are susceptible to oxidation, especially when exposed to heat and light during cooking. Oxidized oils can produce harmful free radicals in the body, leading to oxidative stress, which is closely linked to inflammation and various chronic diseases.

4. Processed and Refined Nature:
Most seed oils go through extensive processing and refining, which often involves high heat and chemical solvents. These processes can strip away important nutrients and antioxidants, leaving behind a product that is more prone to causing inflammation.

5. Replacing Traditional Fats:
In many cultures, seed oils have replaced traditional fats like butter, ghee and coconut oil. While these traditional fats are often higher in saturated fats, they are more stable and less likely to promote inflammation when used in moderation.

While the debate about dietary fats and their impact on health continues, there is growing evidence that excessive consumption of seed oils can contribute to inflammation in the body. To reduce the potential risks associated with seed oils, consider incorporating healthier cooking fats like olive oil, avocado oil, or even small amounts of traditional fats into your diet. Balancing your intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is crucial for maintaining a healthy inflammatory response and overall well-being.

'Eco-friendly' paper and bamboo straws contain PFAS chemicals, study finds 09/13/2023

In an effort to be more “environmentally friendly”, a lot of us have ditched plastic straws and have substituted with other more sustainable materials. It’s seems that despite our good intentions, we need to look more closely to determine if the alternatives really are better for us and the planet. Many of the materials tested including paper, bamboo, and glass were found to contain the “forever chemicals” that are extremely harmful to our health and environment. My vote is to opt for the stainless steel straws. Easy to clean, reusable and portable.

'Eco-friendly' paper and bamboo straws contain PFAS chemicals, study finds Researchers found low concentrations of so-called forever chemicals in various "eco-friendly" straws, raising doubts about whether they're an appropriate alternative.

Is this you night after night? Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, awakening refreshed in the morning? If so, continue reading below for some great tips on how to get a good night’s rest.

1. Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, even on weekends. 🛌

2. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine: Develop calming pre-sleep rituals like reading, deep breathing, or taking a warm bath to signal your body it's time to wind down. 🛀

3. Keep Your Bedroom Comfortable: Ensure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. 😎

4. Limit Exposure to Screens: Avoid screens (phones, tablets, TVs) at least an hour before bed due to their blue light, which can disrupt sleep. 💻

5. Essential Oils: Consider trying essential oils to assist with calming the mind and body. There are a variety of ways to use oils to promote better rest including diffusing, pillow sprays, topical application, or adding to a warm bath. 💧

6. Watch Your Diet: Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime. These can interfere with your sleep patterns. ☕️

7. Get Regular Exercise: Regular physical activity can improve sleep, but avoid vigorous workouts close to bedtime. Workout 👍

8. Manage Stress: Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to reduce stress and anxiety. 🧘‍♀️

9. Limit Naps: If you need to nap, keep it short (20-30 minutes) and earlier in the day to avoid interfering with nighttime sleep. 😴

10. Watch Your Liquid Intake: Limit fluids close to bedtime to reduce nighttime awakenings for bathroom trips. 🧋

11. Evaluate Your Sleep Environment: Ensure your mattress and pillows provide adequate support, and consider white noise machines or earplugs if noise is an issue. ✅

Remember that everyone's sleep needs are different, so it may take some trial and error to find what works best for you.

How do you know when you are ready for a health and wellness redo?

Determining when you're ready for a health and wellness makeover involves introspection and recognizing certain cues:

✅1. Health Concerns: When you have health issues or concerns that motivate you to prioritize well-being.
✅2. Commitment: Feeling mentally prepared and committed to making positive changes in your lifestyle.
✅3. Lifestyle Assessment: Evaluating your current habits, diet, and exercise routines and acknowledging the need for improvement.
✅4. Set Goals: Defining clear, achievable health and wellness goals that you're motivated to pursue.
✅5. Support System: Having access to support from friends, family, or healthcare professionals.
✅6. Education: Seeking knowledge about nutrition, exercise, and overall health to make informed decisions.

Listen to your body and mind, and mind. Remember, small, sustainable changes over time can be more effective than drastic, short-term overhauls. Good health and wellness coaches are your guides, not your gurus.
