Last fall I certified as a Weight Management Specialist with the American Council on Exercise. The course delved into the challenges, emotions, and health risks that come with obesity and how to help clients navigate weight loss with confidence, grace, and compassion. Nothing has helped me more as a trainer than this course.
I'm excited to put the things I learned in this course and in self-study since into practice with my "12-weeks of Wellness" online program starting September 1. As a community, participants will work with me and with each other to follow three simple rules of weight loss and see the change that can come from simple healthy habits! A little family adventure from the weekend! We toured the Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian ship that's currently on a world tour. It was gorgeous and I got to see Chris's inner midshipman come out. 😘
Living in Honolulu for the past 4 weeks has been an absolute dream. I think the experience has been so so good for my family because we've ditched the screens and TV and spend most of our time outside on walks or at the beach now. The kids love to explore parks and shops during the day and then swim until sunset. My daily step average is up 300% of what was typical for me in a normal day!
The most amazing thing has been the change in my kids- they are so much happier when they get plenty of active outdoor time. It's not always easy and we still have bickering- don't get me wrong. But there's something so wonderful about getting into bed with a tired you've earned, you know?
Get outside! Get moving! Life is better healthy.

Here's a throwback to one of my favorite workouts we did back at our Free Fitness Friday classes. Kids especially love this one!
The rules are pretty simple. You draw a card from an UNO deck and do whatever move is assigned to the color- the number of reps is determined by the number on the card! Skips and reverses each get a minute of their assigned move, and +2/+4s get 2 or 4 minutes of walking or jogging. Wild cards= 1 minute of rest!
Feel free to modify as needed and have fun with it!
It doesn't matter what anyone else looks like or can do better than you. Just focus on being better today than you were yesterday and keep moving forward.

Happy World Chocolate Day!
Back in 2019, Chris and I took a chocolate making class during a trip to Peru. We got to see the process from the tree to the shops and even made some of our own treats to take with us. It was fascinating to see! Here's what I learned:
The journey of chocolate begins with harvesting cocoa pods from the cocoa tree. The beans inside the pods are fermented and dried before being roasted to develop their rich flavor. After roasting, the beans are cracked open to remove the nibs, which are ground into chocolate liquor. This liquor is processed with ingredients like sugar and milk which determine the darkness, sweetness, and flavor. Finally, the chocolate is tempered for a shiny finish, molded into bars, and packaged, ready to be shipped to stores and enjoyed by chocolate lovers everywhere.
Now you know. Next time you enjoy a bar of chocolate, think about all the steps it took to make it into your hands- it makes it all the more delicious. :)
It's been a lot of "new" for us lately, so it was super comforting to go to a .fitness class with the same familiar energy, inclusion, and joy you can find all over the country. Thanks for a great time, ladies! I'm so excited for many more classes to come. 😘
It's been tricky to manage fitness in the midst of the craziest move we've ever had, but it feels so good when I get to sneak away for a sweat session.
Even when you don't have time, MAKE time. Life is better healthy.
Big shout out to my friend Alecia for introducing my to Chomps- a cleaner and totally yummy replacement for Slim Jims. Here's the difference between the two.
Calorie-wise it's not a huge discrepancy, but Chomps is able to pack more nutritional value into a smaller calorie budget. That's like getting a better product for a better price- can't beat it! I love the 10g of protein that help me feel fuller longer and help me reach my daily protein goal. Chomps also has less fat and less carbs than Slim Jims.
But the really AMAZING thing is the ingredient list. Slim Jims have a list of 17 ingredients in every stick, including corn syrup and a few things that I can barely pronounce. Chomps has 10 ingredients, 7 of which are spices you could probably find in my spice cabinet.
Keep these on hand for a quick, better snacking option. It might not seem like much, but small changes lead to BIG results.

My son drew this up and asked to make a bunch of copies, laminate them, and hang them up "all over the neighborhood". It totally melts my heart when my kids acknowledge Happy and Able- they're watching and they love being included.

My kids DID NOT want to do this hike. I kind of didn't either. There was whining and "are we there yets" and I questioned if it was going to be worth it.
But once we hit the trail they turned into little nature babies, observing the dragonflies, catching lady bugs, and climbing every rock we passed.
Michael kept us from following the wrong trail and absolutely beamed with pride at his catch. And they both asked us too many times to count: did I do a good job? My favorite thing was when we got back to the car and Virginia told us: "Well I guess I learned a lesson. My legs have to get tired to grow."
Our kids are watching and desperately need opportunities to be active... even wild! We can show them healthy methods of self-care that build mind, body, and heart.

What a weekend! I had the incredible opportunity to run the Zion Ragnar Relay with some really fantastic women. It was SO HARD, and cold, and wet.... but I'd do it all over again.
If you're not familiar, a Ragnar race is a team relay that spans about 120 miles. Our team of 8 took turns running three loops, two of which scaled literal mountains. The race doesn't stop, so our team passed the bib off in the middle of the night, through rain showers, and when we really thought we couldn't do another leg. We also camped for the weekend, squeezing in sleep when we could (rarely). But we did it! And it felt GOOD.
Doing things that take you out of your comfort zone is essential for growth. You can't go any higher if you never take the next step up. I encourage you to do something that scares you a bit- you'll be empowered in body, mind, and heart.
