Last week, Jesus sent the disciples out on their missions. This week, OLPH family, we see the disciples returning to Jesus to report all they had done.
"Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while," He says.
When Jesus and the disciples arrive, we hear that a large crowd is already present. Jesus, filled with pity, begins teaching them.
This gospel offers us three very important reminders:
1) I am not Jesus
2) I am a human BEING, not a human DOING
3) I need rest!

Today, the National Eucharistic Congress explores the theme of Jesus' body, given to us as the Eucharist. Sometimes, it is difficult to remember that the Eucharist is indeed Jesus' body, blood, soul, and divinity. But God himself provides the grace to embrace this truth!

In solidarity with the pilgrims gathered in Indianapolis, let us pray as a family:
My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen!

The past is behind us - we cannot change it. The future lies before us - we cannot live it yet. But now, right NOW, is our chance to love God and serve our neighbor.

The 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time finds Jesus commissioning the Twelve Disciples. We often focus on the instructions Jesus gives the disciples as they depart, but today, let's look at how and why Jesus sends them in pairs.
It is not suitable for man to be alone. As humans, we are called to communion with God and others. By sending the disciples out in pairs, Jesus gives them both a system of support and accountability. In their travels, the disciples rely on each other to encourage and maintain integrity in their trials and successes.
To whom in your life do you offer encouragement and accountability? Who offers it to you?

OLPH family, contemplate this excerpt from St. John of the Cross:
“[Some people], when they [receive Holy Communion], strive with all their might for sensible sweetness, instead of worshipping in humility and praising God within themselves. So much are they given to this, that they think when they derive no sensible sweetness, they have done nothing, so meanly do they think of God; neither do they understand that the least of the blessings of the Most Holy Sacrament is that which touches the senses, and that the invisible grace It confers is far greater; for God frequently withholds these sensible favors from men, that they may fix the eyes of faith upon Himself . . . All this is a very great imperfection, being against the purity of Faith, and directly at variance with the nature of God.”

As we begin this 14th week of Ordinary Time, let's contemplate today's Gospel. Jesus was unable to perform miracles in Nazareth because of the people's lack of faith, aside from curing a few sick people.
The people of Nazareth were Jesus' friends and family. It was an ordinary event for Jesus to return to visit his community, and because it was not unexpected, the people lacked the faith necessary for Jesus to perform miracles.
How often do we go about our ordinary lives lacking faith that Jesus will appear to us, let alone intervene? We forget that Jesus is physically present to us every time we receive the Eucharist and spiritually present all the time. This week, let's make an extra effort to invite and expect Jesus to show up in our ordinary lives in extraordinary ways.

On her deathbed, St. Maria Goretti radically forgave her assailant, and later appeared to him in a vision several years into his incarceration. Transformed by this experience, Serenelli joined the Capuchins as a gardener and laborer and, eventually, was accepted as a lay brother.
Inspired by its namesake, the Serenelli Project reintegrates men into society after prison by providing them stability, accompaniment, and forgiveness. We invite you to learn more about them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdBK53nHAWc
