One of the Keynote speakers at the recent Zonta Convention in Brisbane was Lisa Blair. She is a multi world record holding sailor and has sailed solo around Antartica. Think it sounds crazy?? You should have seen some of the video of what she faced. When in Sidney, my travel mate Sheena and I saw Lisa's boat? ship? vessel? tied up in the harbour. Lisa is passionate about Climate Change. She had people right thoughts about climate change on post it notes and then had them screened printed on to the skin of the boat - aptly named Climate Change Now.

👩🏽‍🏫 ZONTA HISTORY LESSON

Marian De Forest, a playwright and reporter in Buffalo New York, founded the Zonta Club in Buffalo in 1919. Her goal was to bring together like-minded professional women, which at that time were a distinct minority in the world of work. The nine-club Zonta Confederation formed in upstate New York grew to become Zonta International that currently has 30,000 members in more than 1,150 clubs across 63 countries, a truly global organisation. An excellent summary of her achievements can be found at www.suffragettecity100.com/wcw75

There are two significant threats to women achieving their full potential: violence and climate change. Through Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women, Zontians are very familiar with how violence and power imbalances can impact women’s safety and careers; they may not be as familiar with how climate change magnifies gender inequality.

Around the world, millions of people have already lost their homes and livelihoods due to extreme weather events caused by climate change. Most of them are women.

When extreme heat, drought, fires, storms, floods, and sea-level rise disrupt lives and livelihoods, women are less likely than men to recover. Why? Because systemic gender inequality has led to women having fewer resources and choices than men.

With each climate-related disaster, women fall farther behind men. Women are less able to rebuild their lives due to the widening gender gaps in education, pay, legal rights, leadership, and societal responses to climate change.

Globally, most of those affected by poverty and lack of literacy are women; they are often in casual or part-time work and, in many countries, are not allowed to own land, get a loan, sign a contract, or open a bank account. During climate-related disasters, women are more likely to be injured or killed, lose their job, or be forced into slavery or prostitution to survive. Girls are at high risk of being forced to leave school or marry early.

Empowering Women Through Service & Advocacy

Located in Corvallis, Oregon, the Zonta Club of Corvallis is part of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization, dedicated to improving the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. Zonta International has over 36,000 members in 1200 clubs in 67 countries.

As part of Zonta International, a portion of the funds we raise go to international projects that aid women all around the world. Many of our members have their own projects, like building libraries in Africa and many travel abroad regularly to contribute their skills to Zonta International projects.

Locally, the Zonta Club of Corvallis boasts as one of the most successful clubs in the region. Founded over 60 years ago, our club provides numerous scholarships & grants to women & organizations that aid women. We also work with youth & young adult women through our high school “Z Clubs” and Oregon State University “Golden Z Club”. Zonta of Corvallis partners with other like-minded community organizations that empower & raise women up in the community.

Our annual dinner and auction each fall raises the funds we need to distribute scholarships to students & grants to other community organizations that are working on projects in line with our mission. For example, we gave a grant to the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis in 2017 that taught girls how to do computer coding. Each year we distribute on average over $80,000 total over 7 scholarships: General Zonta Scholarship, Young Women in Public Affairs Award, KlaumanS Scholarship for Women in Business Students, Starns Scholarship, Rusnak & Zonta Club STEM Scholarships, LBCC Career Technical Education Scholarship, & The Grateful Nation Scholarship Awarded to a Woman Who Has Served in the Armed Forces. How much we can give each year, is dependent on the success of our auction, so please support our efforts by attending this popular event. SAVE THE DATE: This year our “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party” Themed Dinner & Auction will be held November 17th, 2018 at CH2MHill Alumni Center. Watch for ticket sales towards the end of the summer.
