INDEPENDENCE DAY ~ Variously known as the Fourth of July and independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. Please take time to give thanks on this important holiday.

FATHER’S DAY ~ June 16th. There are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father’s Day. One of these was the start of the Mother’s Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father’s Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. The first Father’s Day was held in June was in 1910. Father’s Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.

ST. PAT’S DAY ~ St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th, it commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, the saint's religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon, wearing of green attire (especially shamrocks). Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast--on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century, and has gradually become a secular celebration of Irish culture in general. Today, St. Patrick's Day is probably the most widely celebrated Saint’s day in the world.

SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY ~ Commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14th celebrating love and affection between loved ones. The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. We hope that love is in your life and you enjoy the happiest Valentine’s Day ever! We will have a “SPECIAL” Valentine for Bingo players on February 8th!

MATCH ONE OF THESE ~ Numbers are always important especially in the bingo business. You need to remember to bring your tally sheet from the previous week to check against the four numbers posted from that week to check for a match. That would win you a free gas card. Matching one of these numbers with your tally number after you buy your pack will also win you a free tally. They are: 173585, 173633, 173651, & 173685. Good luck!
MACE’S RECEIPTS ~ Please save Mace’s receipts for us for Holy Cross School. Thanking you in advance!
FRIENDS ~ Bring a friend or two with you to Bingo. It’s FUN!!!!
VOTE YES! ~ There is a bill in the House in Jefferson City to eliminate the sales tax on Bingo. Please contact your representative to urge them to vote YES on this. This would help ALL Bingos in the STATE!!! There is less than 200 Bingo left in Missouri, down from 1200 a few years ago! Mostly due to lack of workers. By eliminating the sales tax that would get more money to give away. All Bingo money has to be used for charity for that organization!!! Thank You!!!!
BENEFIT BINGO ~ We will have a benefit bingo here February 3rd, on a Saturday, to Benefit Crawford County Survivors Network. Starts at 6:15. It will be somewhat of a different program, also silent auction, 50/50 and other stuff. Plan to come!!!!

“40” Has Become a Special Number at Bingo ~ “40” Facts: Forty is the only number in English whose letters appear in alphabetical order. ~ Minus 40 degrees, or “40 Below”, is the only temperature that is the same in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. ~ When the bubonic plague gripped Europe during the Middle Ages, ships would be isolated in harbor for 40 days before passengers could go ashore. The Italian word for 40 is quaranta – hence quarantine. ~ There are 40 spaces on a standard Monopoly board. Proving that life is a gamble, the game gives players equal odds (one in 40) of going directly to jail or winning the Free Parking Lottery. ~ Forty is the maximum number of players a Major League Baseball team can sign to its roster at once.
