Meet Our Students 07/01/2024

Some of you may have seen a video post from Chris recently about our hosting experience. I don't do as many recruitment posts looking for host families as I once used to, as I tend to let those connections naturally evolve. That being said, ISE (the agency I work with) has a number of students that are still looking to be placed for this upcoming year. A new tool is the student profile search, and I'd welcome anyone to click this link and see if there is a student that might be a good fit for you and your family.

Please note, Frisco Independent School District has changed its rules and it is too late for placements for this upcoming year, but there are other ISDs that have open placements still. Let me know.

Meet Our Students We have been priviledged to have some amazing exchange students participate in our program. Read about some of our highlighted students!

Just one day before SB12 was set to go into effect, US District Court Judge David Hittner issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the law. SB12, otherwise known as the drag bill, was due to become law on Friday, September 1. The law is being challenged by the ACLU and a decision on a permanent injunction could happen within the next two weeks. In the meantime, the State of Texas cannot take action against any performers or establishments that would have been restricted by this law.

An additional lawsuit was filed by an Austin-based performer and Texas Civil Rights Project, and others. This motion for an injunction has not been heard yet. More information at the Texas Civil Rights Project here:

June 26th is one of those days that has been life-changing for LGBTQ+ people on a few occasions.

On 26 June 2003, the SCOTUS determined in Lawrence v. Texas (2003) that a Texas law making it a crime for two persons of the same s*x to engage in intimate s*xual conduct was unconstitutional.

On 26 June 2013, the Supreme Court decided the Windsor v. United States (2013) case, which primarily was about taxation, found that the Defence of Marriage Act, which denied federal recognition of same-s*x marriages, was a violation of the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment.

(Note: In this case, the court recognized that it may take some time to adjust the language of the laws that previously used the terms "husband" and "wife", but one such law, the Immigration Act, had used the word "spouse" (in lieu of husband and wife), so the ruling provided instant relief for immigrants who were married to US Citizens to have their marriages recognized. It was this change in the law that allowed me to pursue my permanent residency, and later my citizenship.)

On that same day, the SCOTUS also ruled on the Hollingsworth v. Perry (2013) case, which permitted the resumption of marriage in the State of California.

On 26 June 2015, the Supreme Court then decided the Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) case, which provided the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-s*x couples. This provided for all same-s*x marriages to be recognized by all states and territories of the USA.

While it is not lost on me that similar decisions today may not be the outcome of our more conservative SCOTUS, I am grateful for the court in 2013 and 2015. So happy June 26th to everyone!

Seven years ago, a hate-filled individual entered the Pulse Nightclub and murdered 49 people. Today on the anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, we remember their names. Too many lives are lost through hate, but we will never forget.

Our History 02/26/2022

A recent post in a Facebook group bought to light something that identified a shortcoming with Frisco Pride; the fact that our collective history was not evident on our site or anywhere else for that matter. This post aims to address some of those thoughts.

For starters, Frisco has at least two LGBTQ-oriented groups. Frisco Pride was established in 1999 as Gay Frisco and then renamed Frisco Pride in 2000 as a reflection of our support from allies and other members who did not identify as “gay.” The other, Pride Frisco (yes the names are very similar) was established in late 2021.

The history of Frisco Pride is significant, and it was a reference to the lack of understanding, knowledge, or even awareness of that history that resonated the most when reading that FB post. For over two decades, Frisco Pride members have worked silently and publicly to change the hearts and minds of our fellow citizens, and we have been incredibly successful in that approach. Personalizing a group of people makes it much more difficult to attack a faceless group. Many of our members over twenty years have put a public face on who an LGTBQ person is in Frisco.

Our history is important, and it is what separates us from many other LGBTQ groups in our area. Frisco Pride is the oldest existing LGBTQ group in Frisco and Collin County! While everything we have done over the 22 years of our existence is not documented, a good amount of it is, and today we rectify this by adding “our history” to the website.
