“Asylee” and “refugee” are extremely common terms used in the immigration field, but have you ever wondered about the difference? Let’s clear it up!

A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee their home country due to persecution, war, or violence. They apply for protection while still outside the United States and, if approved, they are resettled here with support from various agencies.

An asylee is someone who is already in the United States or at the border seeking protection because they cannot return to their home country safely. They apply for asylum and, if granted, they receive similar protections to refugees.

Both are seeking safety, but their paths and processes are different. While HRI only takes on asylum cases, understanding these distinctions is important in supporting those in need.

Heartfelt tributes, rousing toasts and a delicious spread enhanced the evening, and we all agreed upon one thing: this is not goodbye, merely an evening of thanks and celebration. We are deeply thankful for Bill’s dedicated service to our mission, and we look forward to lasting collaborations with him.
Thanks to all who attended!

Our Story

We are lawyers and social workers, pastors and students. We are regular working people.

Through a strong network of dedicated pro-bono lawyers and volunteers, for the past 18 years Human Rights Initiative has helped those who have suffered terrible wrongs at home for worshiping their God - For speaking out against oppression - For being women.

We provide legal representation and social services free of charge to those who have fled persecution and arrived in Dallas, Texas with little or nothing.

When the hateful rhetoric is loud and raucous, it can be tempting to lose sight of why we do what we do. But we are easily drawn back to our mission by our fearless clients and our incredible supporters.

Our clients are the 11-year-old girls fleeing countries like Honduras and El Salvador because they were being stalked by gang members. They are the women who give up everything they have ever known in order to escape the relentless cycle of domestic abuse. They are the parents of young children who are sexually assaulted and work with law enforcement to ensure the offender is put in jail. And they are the “defenders of democracy” who stand up to corrupt politicians in countries like Cameroon and Zimbabwe and pay the price for their candor in broken bones and other trauma.

At Human Rights Initiative, we provide the resources – the hope – these courageous people need to leave their persecutors behind and begin anew.
