With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.
Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, itās extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when theyāre around water.
If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.

Feral VS. Stray
Feral, stray, and indoor or pet cats are all members of the same species; they are all domestic cats. However, understanding their behaviors and interactions with people can shed light on the nuances that set them apart. Stray cats and feral cats exhibit distinct characteristics that may not be immediately apparent.
Whether you are a shelter worker, veterinarian, or cat advocate, or you just share your neighborhood with community cats, knowing how to tell the difference can help inform how best to interact with a cat or what, if any, intervention would be in each catās best interest.

If the pavement is too hot for you, it's too hot for them. Make sure to be aware of the dangers hot pavement can have on your pet's paws.
Any temperature over 100 F or 38 C is too hot for cats. Despite their fondness for all things warm, it's possible for cats to become overheated.
Play with ice cubes
Ice cubes can provide a whole world of fun for cats. Pop some ice cubes on a hard floor and watch your curious cat bat them around the room.
As well as cooling down their paws, which is where cats absorb and lose heat, ice cubes provide enrichment on days when itās best to keep your cat indoors, out of the heat.
Provide shade
Cats will seek shade during hot weather, so it's a good idea to provide plenty of shaded spots in your garden. Trees, shrubs or sun sails are the best way to create shade. You could also try placing your cat's favorite bed in shaded areas to encourage them to keep cool. But keep in mind that cats may avoid their warm, cozy beds altogether in the summer.
Cooling mats and ice packs
Placing a cooling mat in your cat's bed is a great way to keep them cool. There are a wide range of cooling mats for pets available, but you can get a similar effect by wrapping freezer blocks, or ice packs in a blanket.
Make use of wet towels
Most cats hate getting wet, so theyāre unlikely to want to take a dip in water. But dampening a small towel with cool water and dabbing it over your cat's fur can bring some relief from the hot weather. You could also try stroking your cat with wet hands.
Keep on top of grooming
Excess fur on your cat will trap heat. Grooming your cat daily to remove the dead hair will make them feel more comfortable during a heatwave.
You may also notice that your cat is grooming themselves more than normal ā this is nothing to worry about. When your cat's saliva evaporates off their fur, it cools your cat down.
Tornadoes form during intense thunderstorms and can reach wind speeds of 200+ mph. Although tornadoes can occur anywhere, they are prevalent in the Southeast and Midwest. Stay informed by downloading the FEMA app and signing up for weather reports and evacuation notices.
Keep a list handy of pet-friendly shelters and contact information for your local animal control office and ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) in case of evacuation.

Dogs and cats show similar allergy symptoms as humans, yet they experience them most through their skin. Excessive scratching likely means itchy, irritated skin.
Here are a few more symptoms to watch out for:
Scratching and biting their coat or skin
Red, inflamed, or infected skin
Excessive shedding
Compulsive paw licking in dogs
Boot scoots or licking their a**l glands
Chronic ear infections or red, waxy ears (common for dogs who are prone to ear problems in the first place)
Respiratory issues, such as difficulty breathing, coughing, or wheezing (more common in cats)
Heatstroke is no joke! Make sure to keep your pets properly cool and hydrated to avoid overheating.
Dogs are more likely to get dehydrated in the summer months. This means they lose more water, through panting, urinating, and evaporation through their paws, than they take in. Remember to keep your friends hydrated outside this summer.

Have a happy Fourth of July! šŗšø Wishing you and your pets a safe holiday weekend!
Tips for a safe Independence Day: https://vca.mobi/FourthofJulySafety
Fireworks are common throughout the summer, especially on holidays like Independence Day. What we might see as a fun way to celebrate can be terrifying for our furry friends. Loud booms and bright flashes of lights can be seriously distressing for your dog.
What Is Noise Aversion?
At least one-third of dogs suffer from noise aversion, a fear and anxiety exhibited upon hearing loud noises (including fireworks) that leads to stress, suffering and potentially-destructive behavior. Other terms used to describe this response to noise include noise anxiety or noise phobia. Noise aversion shouldnāt be a normal part of ābeing a dog,ā as itās actually a serious medical condition that can be treated. Even though noise aversion is a medical condition, only 40% of owners of dogs that display noise aversion signs seek help from their veterinarian. This is particularly sad, as delaying the diagnosis and treatment can increase both the frequency and severity of a dogās symptoms, worsen their overall quality of life, increase their risk of injury, and even put a strain on the bond between your family and your dog.
Here are top safety BBQ tips for this holiday weekend.
The 4rth of July is fast approaching, from things to give your dog as a distraction to remedies that help them relax, here are ways to make sure your dog feels comfortable and safe during active fireworks:
Medications: Every expert we spoke to agreed: talking with a veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication is a good idea. A recent study found that 69% of owners said medications helped their dogs with firework anxiety. And SileoĀ® is the first gel medication FDA-approved for noise-induced anxiety.
Pheromones: Dog-appeasing pheromone (DAP, or AdaptilĀ®) mimics the pheromones produced by a mother dog, creating a sense of well-being in dogs. Itās available as a room diffuser, spray, or collar and can help your dogās firework anxiety.
Distraction with high-value treats: āSelf-sootheā techniques involve helping the dog calm down through sniffing, chewing, or licking. Some say to use goodies they love and put them in puzzle toys to encourage your dog to focus on something other than the noise outside.
Give your dog lots of comfort and attention: Old behavioral theories recommended avoiding snuggles. Experts say itās up to the dog; if you have a pup looking for reassurance, thereās nothing wrong with quietly soothing them with some cuddles.
Put on a pressure wrap or vest: The ThunderShirt behaves similarly to a āhugā machine, applying even pressure across the torso. Reviews show it may or may not work in the moment when your dog is panicking. But we admit, itās a ācanāt hurt, might helpā option.
We will be closed for Fourth of July! šŗšø That is this Thursday 7/4/24!!! We will be open again Friday July 5th,2024, please make sure you picked up your pets meds that are still here waiting in our office! We open from 8am-6pm. If any questions or concerns please give us a call at 214-368-8573
Who doesn't love a good fireworks show? Pets, that's who! š

Gabapentin is a medication that is approved for use in humans but is sometimes used off-label for dogs. For dogs, it is used for chronic pain management and is prescribed alone or together with another sedative to reduce anxiety and fear during certain events like travel or fireworks.
