Happy Father’s Day from the Meadows Museum! Let’s take a closer look at this painting of Saint Joseph, patron saint of fathers, by Antonio de Pereda y Salgado. While medieval and Renaissance artists generally depicted Joseph as an older, marginalized figure, this portrayal of him as a handsome young man with his son reflects the saint’s growing popularity in 17th-century Spain and presents him as the ideal father in his paternal attentiveness to the Christ child.

On this (which today is also ) we look back on the 2015 exhibition “Human/Nature | The Ridiculous and Sublime: Recent Works by John Alexander,” which explored both the inherent sublimity of the natural world, as well as the dark side of human nature. The religious undertones of the south, the natural environment of the Gulf Coast of Texas and bayous of Louisiana, and his close proximity to the oil industry and its effects on the surrounding wildlife, all left an indelible mark on Alexander, an alumnus of SMU.

starts now! For today’s theme of / we’re sharing our “dollhouse,” a scale model of the Meadows’s galleries. When our curatorial team is planning an exhibition, they make scale models of each object and use the dollhouse to try out different installations. This 3D modeling process provides a real sense of how the objects within a room (or across multiple galleries) will connect with each other and how the audience will experience the exhibition.
