✨More info on Film: "1874: The Birth of Impressionism"✨
The year 2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition, which took place in Paris in the spring of 1874. This private art exhibition, the first of its kind, was a catalyzing moment in the development of European modernism and its repercussions can still be felt in art production today.

To celebrate the occasion, a special screen production has been developed along with multiple exhibitions around the world, including at the National Gallery of Art in DC, the Musée d’Dorsay in Paris, and the DMA’s own The Impressionist Revolution from Monet to Matisse, on view through November 2.

The film was developed in co-production with ARTE France and the Musée d’Orsay to capture the birth and rise of Impressionism over the 12 years leading up to the 1874 exhibition.

👓 September is Color Vision Deficiency Month! Did you know that the DMA offers free EnChroma® glasses rentals at our front desk? Experience the exhibition "The Impressionist Revolution: From Monet to Matisse" like never before with glasses. 🌈 See the art in a whole new light and enjoy a richer, more vibrant palette of colors.

These glasses are designed for visitors with red-green type color vision deficiency, helping 8 out of 10 people see a fuller spectrum of colors. 🌈

But what is color vision deficiency?
It’s a condition, often called “color blindness,” that affects about 8% of the population. It can make it challenging to distinguish between certain colors, especially red and green. The EnChroma® glasses can enhance the experience for those with this condition, letting them see the world—and our art—differently.

Loved your experience?
You can purchase your own pair directly from EnChroma®’s website. Don’t forget to use code DMA25 for 25% off your order!

🌟 Exhibition Highlight 🌟

Curated by Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck, Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, our latest exhibition kicks off with a thought-provoking question: What is at stake for those seen and unseen?

Gerhard Richter's 48 Portraits (1972) features the official portraits of prominent white European and American men. Juxtaposed with Samuel Levi Jones’s 48 Portraits (Underexposed) (2012), it challenges us to consider the gaps in historical representation.

We’re also thrilled to debut Garrett Bradley's America (2019), a film that reimagines rarely recorded aspects of Black life, blending new vignettes with excerpts from the 1913 silent film Lime Kiln Field Day.

🎾🏅 Game, Set, Art! 🏅🎾

In 1948, artist George L. K. Morris painted "Mixed Doubles," a vibrant homage to the timeless appeal of cubism. This artwork is more than just a tennis match; it’s a visual dialogue with notable art critic Clement Greenberg about the future of modern art. With fractured planes, multiple perspectives, and fragmented forms, Morris champions cubism's boundless possibilities, countering the rise of abstract expressionism.

As we cheer on athletes at the Olympics this year, we celebrate the spirit of competition and the artistry in every movement. "Mixed Doubles" captures that energy, blending the precision of European synthetic cubism with the boldness of American iconography. Just as athletes push the boundaries of their sport, Morris pushed the boundaries of visual expression.

"Mixed Doubles" (detail) , George L. K. Morris . Oil on Canvas. Dallas Museum of Art, gift of David T. Owsley via the Alvin and Lucy Owsley and Alconda-Owsley Foundations, 2008.37.
