The 2024 Trailblazer Speaker Series continues to inspire!

We were honored to welcome Hon. Irma Carrillo Ramirez '91, U.S. circuit judge for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Ramirez shared invaluable insights from her distinguished career with our students, offering a unique perspective on the judiciary and the path to the federal bench.

We are incredibly grateful for Judge Ramirez' support of SMU Dedman School of Law and her endless engagement with our students.

Professor Jeffrey Kahn was recently interviewed on the Law on Film podcast regarding the movie "Bridge of Spies" (2015).

The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Tom Hanks. It is based on the true story of American attorney James Donovan, who is assigned to represent Soviet spy Rudolf Abel after Abel is arrested in New York and prosecuted for espionage.

Each year, SMU honors exceptional leaders in philanthropy, business, and civic life with its highest honor for graduates: the Distinguished Alumni Award.

This year, we are proud to recognize Hon. Terry R. Means '74 for his extraordinary achievements, outstanding character, and exemplary citizenship.

Judge Means has dedicated his life to public service, both as a community leader and a legal figure. After a distinguished academic career at SMU, where he was deeply involved in student leadership, he practiced law in Corsicana before being appointed to the 10th Court of Appeals in Texas and later as a United States district judge for the Northern District of Texas.

On October 25, SMU Law Review Association and the Duke Center for Firearms Law will partner to host "Rahimi and the Future of Text, History and Tradition."

The symposium seeks to bring together top Second Amendment and constitutional law scholars, as well as experts on domestic violence, to unpack the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Rahimi.

Professor Eric Ruben recently spoke with NPR's Nina Totenberg regarding a SCOTUS case about the regulation of 'ghost guns.'

They’re called ghost guns because unlike guns bought from a licensed dealer, these build-it-yourself gun kits have no serial numbers stamped on the assembled firearm, so the guns can’t be traced if found at a crime scene.

Now in its 12th year, our Corporate Counsel Externship Program offers a unique combination of classroom learning and real-world experience through externships in corporate legal departments.

We are incredibly grateful to the attorneys in these companies who generously share their expertise, helping shape the next generation of legal professionals. Over 1,000 SMU Dedman Law students have completed the program since its inception.

This year's class joins us from Brazil, China, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. We are excited to see the global perspectives they’ll bring to our law school community.

Girl power at SEALS 2024! 💪

Five SMU Dedman School of Law faculty members will present their work this week at the Southeastern Association of Law Schools (SEALS) Conference in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The annual conference offers faculty a platform to showcase their research, solicit feedback, and engage in panel discussions centered around legal education.
