“Health and family.”

These days, those are the things that matter most to North Texas resident Diana R. She was hospitalized a decade ago after a sudden rush of pain moved through her upper body.

She felt fine after leaving the grocery store just moments before—and was taken aback when the hospital staff told her she was having a heart attack.

The medical emergency reminded Diana of the importance of preventative care in protecting her individual health. It’s why she embraces the opportunity to get access to quality insurance as a client in our Healthcare Navigators program, an initiative to reduce the number of uninsured people in the community.

“My experience signing up was not hard at all,” she said. “To me it was like a load lifted off, knowing that I was covered in case anything happens or just for my routine visits.”

Together with the Live United movement, we’re making strides to ensure that North Texans like Diana have access to the resources they need to live longer, healthier lives. Read our latest healthcare blog post to learn how you can get involved: unitedwaydallas.org/updates/together-we-can-expand-health-insurance-access-and-save-lives.

August is the month when many North Texas scholars return to the classroom—and last week our volunteers answered the call to ensure a smooth transition before the school doors swing open.

💬 “It means everything for us to be able to have this type of wraparound support for our school community,” said Tenisha Allen, principal at J.N. Ervin Elementary School. “The students will be overjoyed when they return to their classrooms.”

J.N. Ervin was one of four local schools where 200 corporate volunteers gathered for our Stock the School event presented by AT&T and Mr. Cooper, and supported by Vistra Corp. and PepsiCo/Frito-Lay.

Thank you to all our sponsors and corporate volunteer teams who showed up with big smiles to freshen up buildings and make teacher spaces shine. Here’s a quick photo recap!

Here’s one way to improve maternal mortality rates in Texas 07/22/2024

"The results from Flourishing Families are encouraging. United Way reports that 89% of women who participated in the program were screened for intimate-partner violence and depression, and if they needed it, were referred to the proper resources."

Our innovative partnerships with Kimberly-Clark, Metrocare Services, Help Me Grow North Texas and other impactful organizations across North Texas are bridging the gaps between families and health care providers by delivering high-quality maternal care to the mothers of our region. Strong families build strong communities, and we're committed to making sure every mom in North Texas has the resources needed to thrive. 💪

📰 Great story by The Dallas Morning News Editorial Board on our work to meet the maternal health needs of North Texas women.

Here’s one way to improve maternal mortality rates in Texas Maternal mortality rates are too high. Thankfully, there are solutions.

Thriving families are the heartbeat of vibrant communities. When new parents and caregivers have all they need to thrive, the entire North Texas community benefits.

We’re proud to partner with local healthcare leaders to deliver prenatal and postpartum support to new parents and other caregivers through our Flourishing Family program, eliminating barriers to healthcare by putting registered nurses, social workers and other resources in local homes. The impact speaks volumes:

✅ 89% of mothers served participated in screenings for postpartum depression and, if applicable, were referred to supportive services.

✅ 100% of participating families report that they now know how to help their child learn.

Thank you, Communities Foundation of Texas, for awarding us a grant to continue our work to revolutionize maternal healthcare across North Texas. Together, alongside the Live United movement, we’re giving families the tools they need to live longer, healthier lives.

Last month, our partners at Texas Instruments wrapped up their annual United Way workplace giving campaign, and wow, did they leave an unforgettable mark! For more than 60 years, TI has played a pivotal role in our mission to create access and opportunity for all our neighbors to thrive.

We are grateful to all the TIers in North Texas who rallied together to change lives by investing their time, talents and resources to shape the future of our region, extending the company's incredible legacy of giving back.

We’re truly inspired by the incredible efforts of Bench & Bar Co-Chairs Sandra Phillips Rogers and David McAtee, Tocqueville Chairs Erin Nealy Cox and Trey Cox, and the General Counsel Host Committee, to help us grow the largest Tocqueville population in the country.

There is a 20-year life expectancy disparity between our neighbors in south and north Dallas, with the southern sector being home to all of Dallas’ 58 food-insecure census tracts. The stakes are too high to continue business as usual.

We’re more energized than ever to bring about lasting change in North Texas after our groundbreaking food access summit, where we hosted local and national leaders for a solutions-based discussion on combatting food insecurity in our region.

A huge thanks to our partners McKesson Corporation Foundation, Make it Matter Foundation, Dallas College, Boston Consulting Group, Dallas Citizens Council, McKinsey & Company and Hunter Hunt, for joining us at our inaugural summit, and to all our panelists, including: Anga Sanders, Tonya Orebo Edwards, Ashlee Kleinert, Benaye Wadkins Chambers, Clarissa Clarke, Doug Rauch and Dan Pallotta, who each provided strong words that struck a fiery chord in our hearts.

💬 “Your ZIP code shouldn't determine your life expectancy, but it does.”

💬 “Food is not a privilege; it is a right.”

💬 “Nutrition is the cheapest form of health care.”

The Food Access Summit was just the first step as we launch a fund, kicked off by a $1 million multi-year investment from Bank of America, to support our work to identify solutions for improving food security in the southern sector and beyond. To recap the summit and learn how you can advocate for expanded food access in North Texas, visit unitedwaydallas.org/updates/united-way-hosts-summit-to-address-food-access-as-texas-is-named-the-most-food-insecure-state/.

Community leaders chart solutions to Dallas’ food access problems 05/18/2024

Texas has the highest number of food-insecure residents in the country and we're working hand-in-hand with local and national leaders to change that.

A big thanks to Bank of America and Market Executive Brian Angle for the company’s $1 million commitment to our fund to support expansion of existing local solutions, import successful models from other markets, and seed new solutions to food accessibility and insecurity in southern Dallas.

Together, with our funders including Margaret Buckley, director of philanthropy and social impact leader at the McKesson Corporation Foundation, Steve Hall, CEO of Make it Matter Foundation, and partners Dr. Justin H. Lonon, chancellor at Dallas College, Hunt Energy CEO Hunter Hunt, the Good Foundation co-founder Ashlee H Kleinert, Dallas Citizens Council CEO William Kelvin Walker and Megan DeFauw, managing director and partner at the Boston Consulting Group, we will increase access to healthy meals in our region.

Access to nutritious food is foundational for every North Texan to live a healthy life every day, setting them up for a successful day at school or work. We’re grateful to the local leaders who joined us at this week’s Food Access Summit, and thankful to Doug Rauch, founder and president of Daily Table and former president of Trader Joe's, and Dan Pallotta, renowned author and filmmaker, for lending their national voices to this important conversation.

Consider this: putting aside just $500 for higher education can triple a child's chance of attending college and quadruple their chance of graduating.

With education comes higher wages in adulthood, leading to a longer, healthier life. This graduation season, we're calling on you to make a difference by investing in a local child's future through our Dollars for College program.
