Today marks my 20th anniversary teaching at Baylor law school.

20 summers ago I walked into a Baylor law school classroom to teach my first ever class. (The building in the photo wasn't even complete - we met in the old law school building across the street.)

I had only a handful of students - yet they gave me a full-sized classroom. We ended up moving ourselves to a library conference room for the rest of the semester.

I did my best and, somewhat surprisingly, they invited me back to teach again the next year. And the year after that. And the year after that. . . and so on.

That experience unlocked a passion for mentoring and teaching that I never realized I had, but which has become central to my life's purpose.

I will never forget the opportunity Baylor gave me to try my hand at teaching. Little did I know that it would lead to 20 years teaching business law courses not only at Baylor, but also at The University of Dallas, Texas A&M University-Commerce, and now at the SMU Cox School of Business.

Over the past 20 years, I have come to think of Baylor as a second "alma mater". And I've spent more time there than all my other schools combined - from pre-k all the way through graduate school!.

I have enjoyed getting to know the wonderful law school staff - most of whom have been there the entire time I've been teaching (which, itself, says a lot about the culture at the school)

Things have certainly changed over the past 2 decades (especially in the past year). But teaching is just as fulfilling and fun for me today as it always has been.

Through my teaching, I've mentored dozens of students - and taught hundreds more. And I learned a lot along the way, as well.

It has been an honor and pleasure to become a part of your success. If you are a former student of mine (from Baylor, or anywhere else) and you see this post - please comment and let me know how you are doing (or feel free to email me). I'd love to celebrate this milestone with you.

Just finished teaching my spring courses at SMU Cox School of Business, and have a week off before I begin teaching my international trade law class at Baylor Law School - for the 20th summer!

Growing up I never really thought about being a teacher/professor, but have been doing this for 20 years at 4 different universities/law schools. But I have found it very rewarding on many levels.

Guess is just goes to show that you should make plans in pencil, not pen, so you can be open to opportunities that you may not have even considered. Sometimes the best things in life are unplanned.
