The thyroid and liver🫶🏼

Your thyroid is the thermostat of the body🌡 and plays a KEY role in metabolism.

Your thyroid produces T4 (an inactive form of thyroid hormone) and sends most of it to the liver to be converted into T3 (the active form of thyroid hormone).

If your liver is sluggish, your body may be unable to convert T4 to the active T3 hormone properly.

This causes things like:
👎 inability to lose weight
👎 exhaustion and fatigue 24/7
👎 digestion problems like constipation
👎 low appetite
👎 frequently getting really hot or cold
👎 thinning hair & brittle nails
👎 poor sleep

CYCLE SYNCING 101🩸
Is it legit?🤔

During different times of the month, you may feel shifts in your mood, energy levels, and appetite. This is because our hormones, specifically estrogen and progesterone, are constantly fluctuating🎢.

🏋🏼‍♀️ During the first half of your cycle (Follicular Phase), as estrogen is rising, you may notice you have more energy, feel stronger during workouts, and are more outgoing.

🥱 During the second half of your cycle (Luteal Phase), when progesterone increases and then both estrogen and progesterone dip, you may experience more significant fatigue, cravings, and want to spend more time alone.

Syncing your nutrition, workout, and lifestyle habits with these phases is known as “cycle syncing.”

In theory, this sounds like a great idea, and if it works for you, more power to you!

However, there isn’t much research supporting it, and there can be so much variation between each woman’s symptoms and each cycle.

You can’t put women into a one-size-fits-all box.

The most important thing you can do is keep track of your individual symptoms and how YOU feel throughout the month.🙌🏼

RED FLAGS🚩 to watch out for when it comes to balancing your hormones.

It’s no surprise that there is A LOT of conflicting information out there about hormones.

Google, social media, advice from doctors— it can be confusing and overwhelming to know what and who to believe😕

Exercise and your hormones⚡️

Did you know that exercise can have a powerful positive effect on your hormones?
Yep, it’s true🙌🏼

Nutrition isn’t the only thing that matters!

On the other hand, TOO much or the wrong kind of exercise can have the opposite effect.

This is because exercise is a form of stress on the body. When it comes to supporting your hormones, the key is balancing proper movement with rest.

Hormones that are effected by exercise include:

1️⃣ Cortisol
Exercise naturally raises cortisol levels, so if you’re already experiencing chronic stress, it may be better to prioritize lower intensity, restorative movement.

However, if you manage your stress well, high-intensity exercise can decrease overall cortisol levels in the body.

2️⃣ Insulin
Insulin is a hormone that helps cells uptake and utilize glucose for energy. Exercise can help promote insulin sensitivity, thus keeping blood sugars more stable.

3️⃣ Thyroid
Exercise can help improve baseline thyroid levels, which promotes healthy metabolic function.

4️⃣S*x hormones
S*x hormones, including testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen, can all be positively influenced by regular activity and improve symptoms of hormone imbalance.

Cortisol— friend or foe?🧐

Cortisol often gets a bad rep, but it’s not inherently bad.

In fact, we NEED cortisol to perform a variety of functions in the body, including:

- Regulating the stress response
- Directing fuel sources
- Suppressing inflammation
- Controlling blood sugar and blood pressure
- Supporting immune health

Our body always wants to stay in a good balance, and the problem comes in when too little or too much cortisol is produced.
When your cortisol is imbalanced, you may experience a whole host of symptoms: sleep troubles, acne/skin issues, gut distress, brain fog, poor memory, and heightened feelings of anxiety. No good!🙁👎🏼

Symptoms of high and low cortisol can sometimes overlap, and because cortisol fluctuates from moment to moment, it’s best to test it throughout the day to assess the overall pattern.

Normal cortisol should surge 📈 in the morning and gradually decline as the day progresses.

To support healthy cortisol levels, we want to create sustainable habits surrounding proper stress management, sleep hygiene, and good nutrition, which are really the foundation for all hormones!

Is your environment causing imbalanced hormones?👇🏼

Hormone disruptors, also known as endocrine disruptors, are natural or synthetic chemicals that interfere with the body’s hormone system.

They work by:

- Mimicking the body’s natural hormones
- Altering the body’s response to hormones
- Blocking the production of certain hormones or their receptors

Hormone disruptors can be found in cleaning products, personal care products, cosmetics, kitchenware, and more.

While we can’t avoid them altogether, we can make simple swaps to reduce our exposure and support healthy hormone balance, such as:

🔹 Switching to stainless steel water bottle
🔹 Limiting canned goods
🔹 Using natural cleaning products
🔹 Filtering your tap water

On birth control or planning to come off of it?

Birth control uses synthetic hormones (estrogen and progestin, or progestin-only) that interfere with the body’s natural hormone production through a negative feedback loop, shutting down ovulation.

🚫 Synthetic hormones do not act in the same way or have the same benefits that the body’s natural hormones have.

The pill depletes the body of important nutrients, including:
- B-vitamins
- Magnesium
- Selenium

Why consuming balanced meals is KEY for supporting your hormones! 🍽

Nutrition, the specific foods we consume and how much, plays a large part in the production and regulation of hormones.

For example:

👉🏼 When the body is in a calorie-restricted state for a prolonged period of time, our thyroid and s*x hormones downregulate.

👉🏼 Similarly, if our diet consists of a lot of quick-burn refined carbohydrates and not much protein/fat, we will see imbalances in our blood sugar and thus hormones.

However, when we SUPPORT our body by getting an array of nutrients in the diet and eating enough, we give our hormones the right building blocks to thrive😊

A balanced meal consists of:
✅Carbs
✅Protein
✅Fat
✅ Micronutrients

Getting off the blood sugar rollercoaster🎢 once and for all.

Did you know that one of the leading causes of hormone imbalances is blood sugar imbalance?
They go hand in hand.

When your blood sugar is constantly spiking up high and dropping down low, it can cause a cascade of hormone disruptions.

Blood sugar dysregulation can show up as increased feelings of anxiety, hanger, extreme cravings, dizziness, and headaches.

When focusing on blood sugar management, we want to hone on a few areas:

🥕Nutrition— getting in balanced meals with carbs, protein, and fats

Why sleep is your superpower for hormones😴⚡️👇🏼

Sleep is vital for every process in the body. Getting adequate sleep (both quality AND quality) is essential in supporting a healthy body and mind.

The connection between sleep and hormones goes both ways.
👉🏼 Poor sleep disrupts hormones and vice versa; imbalanced hormones can cause sleep issues.

Several hormones can be impacted by poor sleep.

Ghrelin— the hormone that signals hunger ⬆️, leading to a greater appetite/cravings

Leptin— the hormone responsible for telling us when we are full ⬇️, leading to decreased satiety

Insulin— the hormone that plays a key role in blood sugar regulation ⬆️

Cortisol — the body’s main stress hormone ⬆️, promoting fat storage

Human Growth Hormone (HGH)— the hormone that is critical for growth & repair during sleep ⬇️

Thyroid Hormone — the hormone responsible for metabolism & body temperature regulation ⬇️, leading to fatigue, feeling cold, and a sluggish metabolism

What health class didn’t teach you about your menstrual cycle👇🏼

Just because symptoms like bloatedness, breast tenderness, mood swings, and cramping leading up to and during your period are common doesn’t mean they are normal🚫

Debilitating PMS symptoms, irregular cycles, spotting, & mood swings point to a greater hormone imbalance going on.

A normal cycle looks like:
🩸2-7 days of blood flow
🩸25-32 day menstrual cycle (1st day of your period— the start of the next one)
🩸 Minimal to no spotting
🩸 Minimal to no cramping
🩸Stable mood

🗓 Even if you aren’t planning to get pregnant, tracking your cycle is key to becoming familiar with your body’s natural rhythm!

👉 Outside of the days you bleed, you want to pay close attention to your body temperature, cervical fluid, heaviness of flow, and changes in mood, appetite, and energy.
These things give you clues into the status of your hormones.

WELCOME! I have a lot of new followers around here so I thought I’d reintroduce myself👋

I’m Taylor, a Functional Medicine Dietitian, and I help women balance their hormones naturally.

💭 Once upon a time I felt like my body was slowly falling apart, and I didn’t know what to do about it.

🚫 I was dragging through the day no matter how much coffee I drank

🚫 I tossed and turned at night

🚫 My periods were irregular and I couldn’t figure out why

🚫 I struggled with hormonal acne, and my confidence took a huge hit

🚫 I got hangry and tired if I went more than a few hours without eating

🚫 I felt irritable and stressed on the reg, even on a good day

I went to doctor after doctor, and the same three things kept happening.
The doctor spent less than five minutes with me and had no interest in what I was struggling with.

I left the office with one of three prescription: anti-depressants, anti-anxiety meds, or birth control

No real answers or solutions 😢

So I decided to take my health into my own hands. After years of school, my experiences, trial and error, and countless hours of research, I cracked the code.

Turmeric doesn’t just lower inflammation 🔥

This golden spice can also:

Latte recipe 👅
- 1 cup hot water
- 2/3 cup almond milk
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
- 1/4 tsp Ceylon cinnamon

How to
1️⃣ Add everything but the almond milk to a mug, and blend with a milk frother
2️⃣ Add the almond milk 🥛

Probiotics aren't just a supplement 💊

You can get probiotics from food! 🙌

But first - What the heck are probiotics? 🧐

Probiotics are a mixture of live bacteria and yeast that live in your gut!

Antibiotics, stress, and the standard American diet wipe out good, healthy gut bacteria ⚠️

This can allow problematic (and sometimes even dangerous) bacteria to multiply and get out of hand 😬

Symptoms of imbalanced gut bacteria include bloating, gas, constipation, acid reflux, sugar cravings, acne, and more 🤯

Targeted probiotic strains are helpful for specific conditions, symptoms, and goals, but I always encourage my clients to incorporate probiotic foods in addition to their probiotic supplements.

You can only fit so many probiotic strains in a capsule, and it's important to get a have a wide variety of bacteria in the gut!
