Transforming lives and communities is what we do at Dallas College. Need proof? Current students and alumni alike are reaping the benefits of a community college education. At this month's Dallas College Board of Trustees meeting, SkillsUSA winners and Myers-LeCroy scholarship recipients were recognized for their hard work and accomplishments.

Alumnus Dr. Tonychris Nnaka and current student Re*****on Skye McCarty are both members of the Myers- LeCroy Scholars Program. This isn't the typical scholarship that covers just tuition and fees, it’s also focused on providing mentorship that has an even greater impact on the scholars when their educational journey is complete. Dr. Nnaka, a 2013 Dallas College graduate and current associate dean for research in the HSC College of Nursing, raved about the scholarship.

"Everyone talks about the financial element, and it was huge, but what really changed my life was the mentorship,” Nnaka said. “When I interviewed for Myers-Lecroy, I connected instantly with the interviewers, including Mr. Myers and Jan LeCroy. That connection turned into more of a fatherly figure relationship with Mike Myers."

Dallas College’s SkillsUSA students stole the show this past June at the SkillsUSA National Competition in Atlanta, where they earned six medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze). Stephanie Gutierrez, a culinary arts student who competed in SkillsUSA, enjoyed everything about her experience.

“This organization teaches us how to advance the skills we’re passionate about while cheering others on,” she said. “I got to be on stage in front of 16,000 people. It was surreal.”

"My whole life I struggled with depression and anxiety. I couldn’t look a person in the face or even order my own food. It was so intense that at 14 I dropped out of high school. I struggled a lot with this, and for a long time I thought I had no future in sight and wanted to give up on life itself at 18 years old, which I almost did. But I decided to keep going, and at 20 I applied to Dallas College to try something new. It was going to be out of my comfort zone, but I learned comfort is the enemy of growth.

"I started taking everyone’s favorite subject, which is math. There I discovered I’m pretty good at it and eventually made it my major. Ever since then, I’ve been motivated to build my resume and experience up, going from a high school dropout with no future in sight to a math major with a high GPA and involvement with the STEM Institute.

"Earlier this year I went to the Ames Research Center in California for the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars program. I'm currently a part of the NASA L'SPACE program where I’m a project manager. It's a remote academy to learn about the space industry. All of this has led me to transferring to UT Austin, my dream school! Dallas College not only gave me a second chance at an education and career, but it gave me a second chance at life. I want to inspire people with my story and to never doubt yourself.

"My dream job is to be a mathematician at NASA, so I can help with science exploration and study unknown phenomena."

When we work together, all community college students win. That’s why we’re proud to announce a new partnership with Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas Woman's University and UNT Dallas called the Dallas Transfer Collaborative, which will help more students transfer and complete bachelor’s degrees on time with less cost. This initiative was started with initial funding by the Commit Partnership’s Opportunity 2040 Fund and JP Morgan Chase.

“We’re in the barrier-busting business. We’re intently focused on the barriers that get in the way of student success to, through and beyond our doors,” said Dr. Justin Lonon, chancellor of Dallas College. “For so many students, transferring from community college to a university is a challenge and a barrier. And that’s what this represents today. We’re removing the barriers for students to provide a seamless pathway.”

"If I never went to community college, I don’t think I would be who I am today and value the things I do. That’s also how my son, Noah, is going to do it.” - Kirsten Bradford, Dallas College student. Read her inspiring story below:

Tell us your Dallas College story.
"I’m originally from Austin, and after deciding not to stay there, I moved to Dallas. I took a gap year, went to real estate school, did well and then got into a relationship and ended up pregnant with my son, Noah. I realized that all I had was a trade, and I wanted more for both of us, so I knew I had to get into school. My dream was to go to SMU, but I decided I should start with a community college, taking evening classes while working in the mornings. It was hard balancing everything, but I liked Dallas College and loved the community and the campus at Cedar Valley. Then I decided to go full time, quitting my job with the support of my parents. My professors were incredibly supportive. I remember Professor Lisa Jackson who held and took care of my son during an entire midterm exam because I couldn’t find a babysitter."

How did your father’s support help you on your journey?
“He never gave up on me. Whenever something was difficult, he stepped in and removed obstacles without hesitation. I remember my dad doing everything in his power to make things easier for me. I was terrified of going to campus for the first time, having never been to college before. He didn't just drop me off; he took me to my classroom on my first day. He encouraged me to participate in any interesting activities on campus, emphasizing the importance of building a community. He was always there, signing me up for things and showing me new opportunities. He just really wanted it for me and believed in my potential, never wanting anyone to tell me I wasn’t capable.”

Can you tell us about the nonprofit that you started?
"Sure! It’s called 4TheGirls Social. We provide resources, seminars and scholarships to support those navigating their education and careers. You can find us at 4TheGirlsSocial.org. Our goal is to create a supportive community, just like the one that helped me here at Dallas College."

Imagine someone thinking it's embarrassing to go to a community college. Couldn't be us. Is it embarrassing to save money? To get your dream job without going into debt? To thrive in a community full of the most hardworking people around? We don't think so either.

Feeling fly and throwing it way back to 1978. Can you name the campus?

“Convenience, the right classes, and it’s really inexpensive. If you’re tight on money, the college will work with you. My dad used to work here for almost a decade, and this place feels like home. I basically grew up here. Coming here, nothing is new.

“I’m studying civil engineering. As a kid, I always liked building stuff and was fascinated with the idea of being on a construction site. As I’ve gotten older, I now dream of walking onto a work site wearing a suit, a white hard hat and blueprints in hand. I want to be the person in charge who is managing it all. At Mountain View, I’m taking classes that are showing me the path and way to make this happen.”
