âFailure after failure after failure. That was my life. I was a criminal for many years. Iâve been clean now for four years. Iâm going here for welding. Right now Iâm taking English, writing and math and staying square. Iâm focused on staying out of jail. I donât care about being âcoolâ or what I thought was popular anymore. Iâm staying free. Eating my own food. Wearing my own clothes. Thatâs all Iâm about now. All my life, being locked up, I was tired of living that way. You canât give up. If thatâs the only card you have to play, that perseverance card, thatâs all you need. Iâm taking my time and being patient because I want to get good grades. I want to do welding because Iâve been rejected everywhere else because of how I look and my past. I also get to play with fire, so Iâm pretty happy about that. People judge me like Iâm a loser or weird or an outcast. They assume Iâm stupid. I donât say I want to prove them wrong because I know theyâre wrong, but thatâs good fuel to accomplish this goal.â
Best of luck with midterms! (We know youâll ace them.) Remember, you didnât come this far only to come this far. Keep going!

If youâre a student in need of free therapy, we have you covered. Read current student Yonataâs story below in his own words.
"I emerged from a profoundly isolating and depressing period during COVID, transitioning from a four-year school with feelings of failure and an avalanche of negative emotions. I felt like I had failed my hardworking parents, lost a newfound community and succumbed to depression, avoiding homework, work and even leaving my roomâŠFortunately, as the campus reopened, I stumbled upon the therapy services at Dallas College. Therapy was something I had heard about but couldn't afford, so Dallas College's provision of free counseling services for students was monumental. I experienced the unique dynamic of talking to someone who listened to me. This counselor helped me navigate life changes and confront my negative thought processes. She guided me to a healthier lifestyle, including exercise and healthier eating, ultimately improving my mental health. Thanks to her support, I not only joined the Student Government Association but also became a leader here. This journey was transformative and marked the beginning of my Dallas College experience." - Yonata, Dallas College student
