I was driving home from work the other day on S Tecumseh and there was a car coming towards me, we were probably going at least 50 or so. I happened to notice something bouncing around under the car coming towards me, I thought they hit a rabbit or something, I turned around to find this poor fella in the middle of the road 😰 thankfully seems uninjured aside from some road rash on his little face.

All chick orders are caught up aside from one person waiting on Ayam Cemani. All egg orders will be complete and caught up by this Saturday.

I talk with SO MANY people between this page, my personal page, text messages, emails, phone calls...it's really hard to keep track of who wants what. I depend heavily on my website to keep track of orders and to keep everything organized.

In regards to recessive white testing in the Ermine community. My rooster who tested cc (recessive white) produces 100% ermine offspring when paired with blacks - which up until a few days ago didn't think this was a possibility, he should have thrown all blacks if he's a true recessive white(?) I don't know why I didn't wrap my head around this sooner, I used to be well versed in rabbit color genetics, I should have thought this out.

Dominant white is on the "I" allele, not the "C" I don't know how many genetic codes account for a chickens color, rabbits for example have 5 - A B C D E an animal gets one code from each parent.

This is where punnet squares come in if for example mom is CC and dad is cc every baby would be Cc

A rabbits code could look something like AA, bb, CC, DD, Ee and you would know what color the bunny is without even seeing the rabbit.

I don't know what all letter codes are involved with chickens but recessive white is on the letter C allele, and DW is on the letter I so they're completely independent of one another.

So until there's a test available for dominant white itself I'm not really sure the recessive white test really matters.

Please let me know your thoughts, we're all still learning as we go.

I do have another large set of eggs going into lockdown today to confirm he doesn't produce any blacks, time will tell.

Now I know why some breeders choose to ignore the genetic side and just do what they do 🤪

I know there's a debate in the ermine community on whether or not genetic testing for recessive white is worth it or important but it is a tool that is available to us and there's no reason not to use it.

That being said, am I going to test every bird right away? Heavens no my flocks of black hens would cost a fortune. BUT if you have dominant white birds (or birds you assume are DW) I'd really recommend testing at least those for now. This rooster was from Ermine breeding, a box of chicks I ordered from a show breeder. He came with Ermines, blacks and another white. This whole time I just assumed he was a DW as he should have been. I am now thankful he was the lowest rooster on the totem pole and was very late to mature.

Thankfully my up and coming keeper DW Cockerel from my own breeding last fall tested C/C

I have plans of a DW only breeding pen and am growing out a nice trio. *Off to order more tests*
