Kade Mattern grew up in Volusia County, knew people who’d attended Daytona State, but hadn’t given much thought to going to college himself.

“A few years ago, my oldest brother enrolled in the Daytona State Law Enforcement Academy and is now a police officer. My next oldest brother graduated from the Emergency Medical Technician program last year and encouraged me to become an EMT/Firefighter. He knew I had no desire to go to college, but he thought I’d really enjoy the program.”

Having recently married, Mattern was, however, thinking about his future and how he could best support a family.

“I decided to follow my brothers’ advice and enrolled in the EMT program. After I graduated from that program, I immediately began fire fighter school.

“The program totally changed my attitude toward college and the opportunities it offers. I studied hard and was excited about serving my community. It was definitely not easy but it was worth the effort!”

His instructors were professional EMT/Paramedics and firefighters who also teach at the Fire Academy.

“My instructors were some of the most impressive people I’ve ever known. They were honest about the struggles of the job, but their dedication and commitment to their occupation was infectious. I respect and appreciate each and every one of them.”

His appreciation extends to the Fire Academy staff, too.

“The support staff at the academy is the best. Miss Theresa Campbell helped me every step of the way from admissions and scholarship assistance and even with encouragement when times were tough.”

Mattern graduated from EMT school in August 2023 and from the Firefighter Academy in December 2023. He was hired immediately by the City of Port Orange and started with them in January 2024.

“I am so proud to be part of what I consider to be the best fire department in the area and I’m so thankful I made the decision to enroll at DSC.”

His advice to anyone considering attending DSC?

“I would absolutely encourage anyone to explore what DSC has to offer. If they are considering the fire fighter program, I would tell them that DSC will give them the foundation they need for a career in community service. The academy is your opportunity to have a job interview every day, as the instructors are actual firefighters who can recommend you for employment. Your work ethic and integrity matters – take advantage of what DSC has to offer!”

For Evan Birchfield, who moved to Daytona Beach from North Carolina with his family in 2005 and attended Atlantic High School, Daytona State offered two things that were important to him – it was close to home and offered a variety of programs.

“Daytona State was always on my radar, thanks to its reputation and the opportunities it presented. My family is very important to me, and the prospect of attending DSC meant I could pursue a higher education while remaining close to home.”

Evan earned his Associate of Arts degree while working, and transferred to the University of Central Florida before deciding after two semesters to return to Daytona State to work toward a Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management.

“My father has been a significant influence in my life, particularly in shaping my character and career aspirations. His extensive experience in management inspired me to follow a similar path. Daytona State offered the same four-year degree I was going after, but I didn’t have to drive to Orlando and could learn in the classroom I preferred.

“Daytona State was pivotal in shaping my trajectory toward success. I was able to hone essential professional skills and gained insights into effective leadership and workplace management. The convenience of obtaining my degree close to home allowed me to maintain strong ties with my family, a cornerstone of my support system.

“I had the privilege of being taught by several exceptional professors, but one who stands out is Dr. Shana Deyo. Her expertise and passion for teaching left a lasting impression on me. I continue to seek her advice and guidance and I’m profoundly grateful for her mentorship and support.”

After graduating, Evan began working in the Human Resources field, but a lifelong passion for the Atlanta Falcons led to a position writing and managing social media for SBNation and TheFalcoholic.com, a website for fans of the team.

“I had the opportunity to travel, cover professional sporting events from the press box and meet and interview some profound people, such as NFL players and team owners. I still write for TheFalcoholic on the side and have made a plethora of friendships along the way.”

With the onset of COVID, Evan began looking for an opportunity that would allow him to stay closer to home with his family, while still pursuing his passion for social media and writing. That opportunity came in the form of a position with Florida Health Care Plans, based in Daytona Beach.

“At FHCP, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Content Creator & Social Media Specialist, a role that allows me to create content that empowers our members with the knowledge they need to enhance and sustain their health.”

Evan’s advice to someone considering attending Daytona State?

“The importance of higher education cannot be overstated, and DSC stands as a beacon of opportunity in our community, offering a platform to explore diverse areas of interest. Moreover, the College is continually evolving and expanding its offerings, ensuring students receive a comprehensive and enriching educational experience. As a proud alum, I wholeheartedly endorse the College as an invaluable steppingstone toward personal and professional growth.

“I also owe a profound debt of gratitude to my parents whose unwavering support and encouragement fueled my ambitions and emboldened me to pursue my dreams, even when they involved taking significant risks.”

Sean Mooney was born and raised in Volusia County. When he was a senior at Seabreeze High School, his teachers and advisors talked up Daytona State. A tour of the Daytona Beach Campus and a chat with an academic advisor sealed the deal.

Mooney had an interest in radio broadcasting, but exposure to DSC's Television Broadcast TV Production program cemented the track for his future career.

"There really is nothing like it anywhere else. Your first semester, you're running real TV equipment on actual TV shows. It was daunting at first, but the staff and teachers made sure we had everything we needed to be successful.

"Everyone was supported; everyone got the time and help they needed, and it led to making an amazing product that we had the honor of airing live on TV."

Mooney is particularly appreciative of Professor Anita Bevins.

"When I first got to DSC, Professor Bevins was completely honest and straightforward about what expectations you should carry with you into TV. It's not easy and it's a lot of long hours, hard work and dedication. She didn't say this to scare us. She wanted to be completely open about the challenges of this very competitive business and how to succeed. She really helped me see how fruitful a career in TV can be if I wanted to put in the effort and the work."

Mooney got his first broadcasting job – operating the board for NASCAR races with WNDB Daytona Beach – during his second year in the Broadcast TV program. The station reorganized its news department and Mooney was promoted to news reporter. When the news director moved on, Mooney and another reporter ran the entire news operation, and Mooney's voice could be heard on nearly every news, weather or traffic report in Daytona Beach.

Eventually he moved to WESH 2 News in Orlando, where he works now.

"I'm one of the dayside assignment editors. We are in charge of monitoring communications with readers and viewers and sourcing information for news stories. We also oversee fleet and helicopter operations, and act as liaisons to our network partners and affiliates.

"In my first year, I was also trained as a photographer for our iconic helicopter - Chopper 2. This includes running the nose-mounted gyro-stabilized camera, police scanners, microwave transmission system and radios."

Mooney's advice to someone considering a career in news?

"To be blunt, TV is not an easy gig, especially news. It's a 24-hour business, and that includes holidays. If you want to pursue a career in TV, dedicate yourself to what you do, love what you do, and appreciate what you do. And don't be afraid to start in a smaller market. Everyone has to start somewhere!”

History of Daytona State College

Over the past 60 years, Daytona State College has evolved from a small campus into an academically superior multi-campus institution providing educational and cultural programs for the citizens of Volusia and Flagler counties. It began in 1957 when the Florida Legislature authorized Daytona Beach Junior College as one of the state's first comprehensive colleges. The college was divided into three divisions: college credit, adult education and the Mary Karl Vocational School. Although the three divisions were administered by one president, they essentially functioned as separate entities under the Volusia County School System.

Volusia County Community College, also a separate entity under the school system, merged with DBJC in 1965. The 1968 Legislature combined the divisions into a single administrative unit under a District Board of Trustees independent of the county school system. In 1971, the official name of the college was changed from Daytona Beach Junior College to Daytona Beach Community College. In 2008, the District Board of Trustees and the state of Florida approved the college's request for yet another name change - Daytona State College. This was done to reflect the institution’s transition to a four-year institution offering workforce baccalaureate degrees.

Today, Daytona State offers more than 100 certificate, associate and baccalaureate degree programs, with graduates serving in critical fields that include health care, emergency services, business, education, hospitality, engineering, technology and more. The college also offers the Associate of Arts University Transfer degree, which provides students the first two years of a four-year bachelor's degree, saving our students and their families thousands in the process. As a Level II state college, the institution also offers the Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management, as well as seven bachelor's degrees in education, including: Mathematics (grades 6-12), Biology (grades 6-12), Earth/Space Science (grades 6-12), Exceptional Student Education (grades K-12), Chemistry (grades 6-12), Physics (grades 6-12) and Elementary Education (grades K-6). The college also offers the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
