Caregiver Spotlight on DONNA DALE
1. How long have you been with Living Well Senior Care?
I started in Aug 2015 but had to leave in Nov of 2016 to go care for my parents in Mi. I returned in Aug 2018, was here less than a week and Christina text to see if I would come back. Almost 5 years now plus my previous year.
2. Were you a caregiver before?
I have always been the one in the family to care for members who were sick, dealing with injuries, cancer and aging, but when my husband had his TBI, 3 months after moving to Tx, I became a 24/7 caregiver. I learned so much that year, things about the brain we all take for granted and normally do not think about.
3. What’s the best part of your job?
Helping people be as independent as they can and to live and enjoy life as much as possible, no matter what their issues are. When you see them smile, after they accomplish something, even if its not perfect, its so rewarding.
4. What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Getting those who do not want me around to understand I am there to assist them, not take over and do what they feel they can still do. Gaining their trust!
5. What was the most memorable event as a caregiver?
Sad time, but when one of my clients was passing away. family came to care for him the last days. I still went to visit him. Family called one morning to let me know that hospice said it would only be hours before his passing and he had not been responsive for 2 days. I went immediately, sat on his bed and told him I was there. He opened his eyes, smiled at me and said he was hoping I would come to see him. We talked a few minutes, then he went to sleep. I left after about an hour and he passed away that afternoon.
Knowing I had gained his trust and became part of his family, and also close to his family, was such a good feeling. I knew then, we do make a difference
6. What advice would you give other caregivers?
Do not take over for your clients, give them time to do what they can for themselves. When dementia is getting in the way, redirect! Get into their lives, try to get as much information about their personal lives as possible. If they have a hobby, ask them if they can show you how to do it.
A wise woman once told me, telling a therapeutic lie, at times, can be your best tool!

CURRENT RESEARCH

There is no approved treatment, but there could soon be hope. Based on some promising initial findings, and a new three-year, $21 million grant from the National Institute on Aging, researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are launching a Phase 2b study of neflamapimod for Lewy Body dementia. What is the new treatment for Lewy body dementia?
Neflamapimod works as a very specific inhibitor of an enzyme that leads to loss of brain cells that make acetylcholine. This therapy could work on two fronts, helping to preserve both cognitive function and motor function seen in LBD

The multicenter study is a public-private partnership between the Miller School, EIP Pharmaceuticals — the company developing neflamapimod — and the Lewy Body Dementia Association, a non-profit that helps educate the public about the condition and will help promote the study.
