Hmura Hockey Development
Developmental model for hockey players through an environment of advanced technique and high numbers of repetitions.
The two most non-existent focuses in “skills” training: Passing (not technical, instead skillful) & Leverage… how often do you witness these the focus…
Already looking like a hockey player…
The old “sweat test” theory. My kid needs to stay “pushed”. Let’s get them to a level that is so uncomfortable for them and expect them to grow…
Just had a good talk with players about what I refer to as Intrinsic Knowledge. Your expertise is your value. Giving instructions is a lot different than giving knowledge. People that don’t understand usually demean, keep doing your thing and forget about what the losers in the background are saying!
The most elite players are the fastest. I am not a power skating coach - but I train players to be faster - but I don’t work on their skating necessarily...
Exactly part of how I taught myself to teach players, but also present in my evolving of how I manage players and people.
The very topic I was just discussing yesterday about how to develop each player- not just the bottom or the players that have “the most room for growth”. The problem is that at any given time at a session ran by a “Skills Coach”, most players get nothing that actually helps them in the achievement of what they ultimately want, especially the top group of players in a given session.
Soooo true for player development and “coaching”.
So true in so many ways. Stick to what you do, make them continue to envy your success, and you’ll notice people’s true colors eventually.
The better kids = the less you have to teach them, primarily because they can just be a little more dominant and get away with it. Biggest disguise for the bad coaches out there = having to have (recruit relentlessly) the best kids.
Coaches and parents in a chest pounding match, just imagine feeling validated as an adult by kids winning a hockey game. Those wins don’t amount to anything substantial when you watch others move on when they’re older. Development leads to winning in more ways than just a game, winning doesn’t lead to development- we’ll maybe the development of validation… Find people that educate, not those that sell.
Learn or cheat. One will lead your future, the other will catch up to you at some point.
The least any coach can do is educate a parent(s). Most revert to selling. When you buy something you got sold, it never feels good or right. Something you believe in for the right reasons you never think twice about.
Educate yourselves!
Beware of coaches and parents selling the dream. Ask for facts about their history of moving kids on to the next level, or perhaps how many players are still there that started off there from the beginning- anything less than half, BEWARE!
Ask for facts and educate yourself!
BOOM! No one gets this, every year the next wave thinks they are the exception. It’s a process, and in order for people to understand it, you have to educate them. The right ones will listen. You can only lead a horse to water.
Let the All-Star team assembly season start.
Something to think about, coaches and parents! Good read!
Something we believe in. Read it, and then read it again. If you’re a parent and you still think differently after reading it twice, you are probably the problem!
Other player’s effort is not the problem, your player doesn’t have the leadership to set the tone and make other players work harder. Simple as that.

I can’t tell you how many opposing parents and sources have said it’s a flaw that I don’t know how to coach because I don’t say much on the bench. *ttotalk (quote from Doug Lemov)
TRUTH!
PREACH!!
Apparently when I tell everyone that I hope he doesn’t play hockey and chooses another sport that keeps me out of the rink more, he didn’t get the memo…
GREAT PIC! Players and Coaches, what is the biggest thing that stands out to you in this picture? Good principle for all, especially development coaches.
👆👆👆THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR HOCKEY PLAYERS. This will typically slow down the practice or session, but will allow them to play much faster as time goes on. Parents want the sweat test passed- they don’t know what they wish for, as many of their kids turn out to be the robot hard workers that can never translate their hard work into production- don’t let your players turn out like that, stick to your guns coaches.
Saw this on Twitter yesterday, and this is exactly what the problem is. 3-5 min per game?? Like maybe per period… check yourself if you’re doing this, it’s pathetic and you’re a pathetic human.
Talk about the best part of coaching on the development side- getting texts like these. First preseason game of the season in the AHL for this young player, safe to say think we changed the way he sees the game.
Sounds like what about 80% of our training is. Very few teach it. Even more important most coaches at even the highest level of youth hockey at Tier 1 don’t know how to teach it. Focus on it, learn how to teach the concepts- your players will be that much more ahead!

BINGO! And there has been points where we are criticized for working on reads and scanning too much, yet we don’t really see it being worked on elsewhere. More edge work, more stickhandling doesn’t solve the problem.
