Many have asked about my father's soeech at church and wanted to learn more about my great-grandfather. I have taken the liberty to type this for you all to read and learn about this great man! Note the resmblance of my dayjer and John Jones! ❤️

My name is Ronald Jones. I was born and raised in a small town known as Bahama. A few weeks ago, one of the female church members asked me, "What do you know about the history of John Jones Road?" All I could reply was it was named after my grandfather. So then I did some research and my grandfather's name was John Bernice Jones. He was born July 10, 1881. His parents were Rosalie Lipscomb and Ulysses Jones. John married Elena Glenn on December 25, 1901. And in 1918, he secured about 193 acres of land in Bahama, just down the road from Mt Calvary Church. The old house is still standing today. Very little is known about the private life of my grandfather, who died on July 31, 1954, at the age of 75. Just five months before my dad was born. From what he has My father's name is Ronald Jones. From what I have learned, John Jones was a great man of character. He loved his community and he loved his church. He would take in children whose parents couldn't or wouldn't take care of them. John would house them, feed them, discipline them and educate them. Many of the children under his care continued to pursue higher education. It is said that John Bernice Jones was a Deacon and a trustee at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. When the church was in need of funds for expansion, John Jones mortgaged his own house to help provide the funds! In 1949, the educational building was erected and named in honor of John B. Jones, where his picture still hangs today. Words like loyal, dependable, devoted and courageous was used to reference my grandfather's legacy. His house was the first house built on the 193 acre plot of land that he and his wife secured. John Jones Road began as a rough, narrow, muddy wagon trail that led from U.S. 501 Roxboro Road to access his property. Most people that traveled past the old home of John Jones don't even notice that the house is facing U.S. 501 Roxboro Road, not John Jones Road like all the other houses on the road. John Jones established his farm on the 193 acre plot and as the farm grew, so did the need to make more road to enable resources for the land and access the fields and crops. The road finally came to an end at Stagville Road, beside where the beautiful Mount Calvary Baptist Church stands today. John Jones Road from end to end is about three miles long. Finally, the road was accepted to become a state maintained road, so they made it wider, scraped it almost every month, kept it graveled, took out a few dangerous curves and rebuilt the bridge over the creek at the bottom of the hill. There was a huge increase in traffic as people discovered a shortcut advantage from Stagville to 501 Roxboro Road and vice versa. In the late 70s and early 80s, the state began construction on the road to prepare it to be paved. This road was listed as Rural Route 1 until it was paved in the mid 80s. My address used to be Route 1, Box 272. Now it is 507 John Jones Road after the paving. The official signs were erected officially identifying this road as John Jones Road. John Jones Road is a true legacy to my grandfather, and a great heritage to the Jones family name. Many thanks to my niece, Michelle Ragland, for helping with the research.
