In case you missed me in Island Park last night (we'll be back June 14) but also I'll be in Long Beach this coming Wednesday.
In addition to housing the relief center for East Rockway and the surrounding area, Bethany Congregational Church of East Rockaway, UCC hosted Next Step Ministries at the church every summer since Hurricane Sandy. Next Step went into the surrounding community and performed repairs free of charge for our neighbors.
The church has been part of the community since 1885. Bethany runs the Thriftique, which is a thrift store that sells clothing and household items at very reduced prices and many low-income families in the area come here to buy these items that they could not afford to do anywhere else. Also, Bethany collects food for the Long Island Council Of Churches Emergency Food Pantry in Freeport and makes weekly contributions. The Church shares its worship space with the Korean Methodist Church. AA meets at the church, and the Boy Scouts of America and a Dog Obedience Group.
ALL profits from HurriCon; table fees, admission fees, food sales, and raffle sales go back to the church to continue its mission in the community.
Bethany Congregational Church is a member of the UCC and is an “open and affirming” congregation, which means that everyone is welcome to worship regardless of race, creed, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation. All are welcome!
Please come out to the church and support HurriCon on 7/20/24 and 11/23/24!
I didn’t know this, did you?
During the Kree-Skrull War, Marvel changed their comic prices from 15 cents to 25 cents, adopting the Marvel Comics Group banner, then reduced it to 20 cents to undercut DC's 25-cent pricing. This violated the Nixon administration's price freeze. Instead of issuing refunds, Marvel provided additional content to readers at no extra cost, either through backup features or increased page count. The freeze lasted 90 days, after which companies could apply for a price change. DC, bound by paper and press time contracts, remained at the higher price and page count for nearly a year.
Prime Steve Ditko!
All six splash pages from The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, 1964, where our hero battles each member of the Sinister Six were masterful uses by Steve Ditko of full-page illustrations magnificently punctuating the narrative, turning each confrontation into a striking visual statement.

The bad news is that the Long Island Council Of Churches Emergency Food Pantry in Freeport, New York will close at the end of this week. Their landlord needs the space, so they have to pack up and leave. A friend said to me "Where will all this people who depend on the pantry get food?"
What can you do to help?
First of all, you can donate.
https://www.liccdonate.org/
The Licc Licc is going to need funds to find a new space. Please donate if you can.
If you work for a large company, check to see if you have a "Giving Program" benefit offered by the company. My employer AMC Networks matches my donation to the LICC.
Do you know of a space of at least 2500 square feet that the pantry can use? Does your church have a pantry that the LICC can supply with food? Can you reach out to our local government officials and ask for their help?
Lastly, pray.
Thank you.
LICC Long Island Council of Churches Emergency Donation Site LICCDonate is the storefront website for the LICC. We make it easy to donate food and other items that are in critical need.

HurriCon
Hurricane Sandy hit my hometown of East Rockaway hard. Homes were flooded, trees were toppled, boats were thrown up on the mainland, and many, many residents were forced from their homes and lost everything.
The residents of East Rockaway reacted fast and set up a relief center for donations at the Main Street Firehouse. The problem was that it was not feasible to keep it there because this was a working firehouse. When Pastor Mark Lukens of Bethany Congregational Church heard that the relief center needed a new home, he offered the gym at the church, right up Main Street from the firehouse.
The relief center stayed at the church gym for months. With the help of the Red Cross, FEMA, United Way and caring neighbors; donations of everything imaginable came in; mops, brooms, batteries, diapers, clothing, boots, flashlights, food, MRE’s and the list goes on. People who lost everything came in and walked out with what they needed to get on with their lives. Hundreds of people came to the Bethany Church gym and the gym floor took a beating. Promises were made about refinishing the floor, but ultimately Bethany Church had to foot the entire bill. The gym floor has been redone and looks great, but we still have to pay for it.
