Did you know that LGBTQIA+ people are 2x as likely to experience homelessness? Youth are especially at risk of housing insecurity.

In honor of Pride Month, we're highlighting some local organizations working to support LGBTQIA+ communities: Avenues for Youth, The Bridge for Youth, The Link and Clare Housing.

Studies have found that a "Housing First" approach (where a stable residence is given without condition), allows those experiencing homelessness to focus on making progress in other areas. This has led to 75-91% of Housing First tenants remaining stably housed after a year. (Source: Community Solutions)

Here are some local organizations who utilize a Housing First model: Radias Health, The Link, Supportive Living Solutions, People Incorporated, Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative

In 1980, there were about two dozen food banks in the U.S. Today, there are more than 400.

But more than 44 million Americans still endure hunger--13 million are children who don't know when they'll have their next meal.

Consider donating to your local food shelf today in honor of World Hunger Day, and help end hunger in your community. (Source: Move for Hunger)

“Homelessness is devastating to one’s mental health. The constant violence that people are exposed to … the lack of sleep, the stress and uncertainty, the humiliation — all of these worsen people’s mental health. And homelessness really limits people’s access to treatment.”
-Dr. Margot Kushel, Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative at the University of California, San Francisco (Source: Marketplace)

Nearly three-quarters of people experiencing homelessness are not receiving adequate care for their mental health issues. That rate is 6 to 10 times higher than that of the general population. And, for the unhoused who are 65 and older, the percentage of unmet mental health needs grows. (Source: Marketplace)

Alcoholism can be the cause of or caused by being unhoused.
The notes "It can be more challenging for people who are homeless to stop using substances, because they may not have easy access to treatment, often have smaller social support networks, may have decreased motivation to quit drugs or alcohol, and may have other, higher priorities, such as finding housing or food."

Health and stable housing can have a vicious relationship. Health conditions can lead to not being able to work, which can lead to not being able to afford rent. With little to no access to healthcare, exposure to the elements, lack of access to sanitation and healthy foods and the stress of the situation can further exacerbate a health condition. Close quarter living spreads illness, and being sick prevents stable employment.

Most shelters do not provide free feminine hygiene products, or they only provide a very small amount. And a lack of consistent access to sanitation makes reusable options unviable.

That means women who are unhoused are more likely to develop health complications due to a lack of access to adequate sanitary products.
