August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month!

Breastfeeding provides numerous medical benefits for both mom and baby. It provides perfect nutrition for baby, antibodies to protect them from various illnesses, and reduces the risk of allergies and chronic diseases. Benefits for mom include bonding, a faster recovery, and reduced risk of diseases later in life like diabetes and certain cancers.

During pregnancy, we can help you choose and order your breast pump. In the hospital, lactation consultants see patients to help get their breastfeeding journey started. Once at home, we can further help you with questions or get you connected with an outpatient lactation consultant. We know breastfeeding is hard work and we always strive to create a supportive environment.

We asked Dr. Persch, what is one piece of advice you would offer to new moms/parents?

She said, “Some advice for new moms: There is the saying that it takes a village to raise a child. It is certainly true how important it is to have a community of people around you to help care for and support your little one. But, don’t forget that the support is there for you too. As you recover physically, mentally and emotionally from childbirth and transition into motherhood, you are not alone. Postpartum support for moms includes close follow up with our office, the option for an in-home nursing evaluation, postpartum depression screening and treatment, pelvic floor physical therapy and more.”

What is Group B Strep?
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a common bacteria that many people carry in their bodies without any symptoms. GBS is found in the gastrointestinal and ge***al tracts of about 25% of healthy adult women.

How do I know if I have GBS?
Pregnant individuals are screened for GBS around week 35-37 of pregnancy to prevent transmission.

What happens if I have GBS?
No need to worry, if your results come back positive, antibiotics will be given during labor to greatly reduce the risk of passing it to newborns.

Why does being an independent practice matter to you?

Happy Fathers Day to all of the fathers out there, including our very own Dr. Angelats!

06/13/2024

As providers, we strive to do this every day. We want our patients to feel heard, understood, and taken care of. Thank you for sharing, Alexandra!

“My husband and I truly appreciate the time and care from Dr. Persch. She was incredibly calm, concerned, and thorough. She allowed time for us to talk about our loss, truly listened to our perspective, and gave us a solid plan of care moving forward. We were absolutely impressed when she walked in the room and was already well versed in our story and our history. She knew about our previous deliveries, knew about our loss already, and was able to incorporate our history into the plan moving forward.” - Alexandra

We would like to welcome our new Dietitian, Rachel Thompson!

"While I’m new to women’s health, I’ve been a registered dietitian since 2016. Most recently, I’ve been working in long term care but prior to that I’ve done in-patient, out-patient and community outreach.

As a relatively new mom myself, I love being able to support patients through the enormous life change that is pregnancy and entering motherhood.

Outside of work, you can usually find my family doing something outdoors like camping, hiking, backpacking or boating."

Typical patients that will see Rachel have: gestational diabetes, pregnancy with multiples, pregnancy with history of bariatric surgery, PCOS, and weight management.

In the United States among married women ages 15-49 with no prior births, about 1 in 5 (19%) are unable to get pregnant after one year of trying. (CDC)

About 9% of men and 11% of women of reproductive age in the U.S. have experienced fertility problems. (NIH)

Cumulative conception rates for ages 35 and under are around 75% after 6 months, 90% after one year and 95% after trying for two years. Pregnancy rates over age 35 can take longer. (NIH)

These statistics paint a picture that infertility is more widespread than some may think. While conceiving a child seems to be the most natural progression for a couple, at times this does not happen right away. Wanting a child and not having it happen right away can be very frustrating and emotionally draining. You are not alone. If you have been trying to conceive for 1+ year without a pregnancy, please see your OB/GYN Physician. If you are over 35, please see a Physician after trying for 6 months without a pregnancy.

“I never liked going to the OB before I found Diamond Women’s Center. But the office is so personable and you can tell they know who you are and are all very sweet. I was late for the first time and the front desk reassured me and said they knew I was usually always on time. It’s nice to go to clinic where I am not just another patient number. Dr. Persch especially has been amazing in helping investigate my pregnancy loss. I couldn’t ask for a better care team. I am appreciative of the entire staff.”

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

"The most rewarding part of my job is the ongoing relationships I get to have with patients. Whether that is helping someone deliver a healthy baby after they have previously gone through pregnancy loss or fertility issues, finding ways to manage symptoms of abnormal bleeding or bothersome menopausal symptoms, or even just seeing someone regularly for their annual well woman exams and finding out how they have been over the year. Getting to see my patients through the ups and downs of different life events and milestones is very satisfying." - Dr. Paige Persch

Wow, such a thoughtful testimonial for not only Dr. Schwab but our clinic too. Your comments mean the world to us!

“Dr. Schwab listened to me explain my medical issues and she understood what I meant. She patiently discussed a few treatment options and gave me the opportunity to help make the choice of medication. Her schedule was full, my appointment being the last of the day, yet she didn't make me feel she was rushed. I would definitely recommend Dr. Schwab, and kudos to the front desk staff and the person who roomed me. End of the day? Holiday weekend coming up? Staff eager to get home? Of course, yet everyone still seemed cheerful. I've worked in a clinic myself and was very impressed by my visit.”
